My puppy is suddenly sick, won't eat or drink, and has no energy.

Hi there! I'm very sorry to hear about Kimi's troubles. If I had a client call and report the clinical signs you are describing, I'd ask to see the puppy right away. Young puppies, especially smaller ones, can be susceptible to getting a low blood sugar if they go a long time without eating. Not to mention that they can get dehydrated fairly easily as well. I'd definitely recommend Kimi go in to see her veterinarian right away. The veterinarian can perform an exam and check her hydration status. They may also want to check Kimi for an infection of some kind, and/or evaluate some diagnostics like radiographs and lab work. Kimi may need some in-hospital treatments or even just some medications for you to give at home. Things that can make puppies not feel well and stop eating include, but aren't limited to viruses, baceterial infections, ingesting toxic materials, ingesting pieces of toy or blanket and getting a blockage, eating anything out of the ordinary and getting indigestion, or even parasites. Hi, I think Lola is not 100% if she is refusing to eat and just wanting to sit on your lap. I would recommend that you have her checked over as puppies are quite delicate and need to be eating regularly. She could have parasites or just a little temperature for example, it could be something quite simple but obviously that could cause her to feel poorly. Have her seen by your vet so that she can get any necessary treatment. Hope she gets better soon !

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It sounds like Joplin is very very sick. She might have a condition called "Parvovirus" which is a very serious virus that affects puppies, and is more likely if Joplin is unvaccinated. The other possible causes in a puppy include an obstruction in her gut (a blockage from a foreign object (ex. ball) that she ate, or an intussusception (the intestines telescoping in on each other). Also, depending on her age, pyometra is possible along with many other conditions. With what you are describing, I am very concerned that she could die without aggressive care. I strongly recommend you get Joplin to a vet right away, and if your vet is closed go to your closest emergency clinic. They will recommend a test of her poop, as well as possible bloodwork and x-rays, and will likely want to keep her in hospital on IV fluids and medications. I'm sorry to hear that Gizmo is so sick! Unfortunately, these symptoms are very worrying. Lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhea are often caused by a serious illness such as parvo, and can be life-threatening in a puppy this age. I know that costs are a concern for you, but Gizmo really needs to see a vet right away - I would be worried that she may not survive without veterinary care. This doesn't necessarily need to be an expensive visit; if you let the vet know that you have financial constraints, they can often come up with a fairly inexpensive plan for supportive care (including IV fluids and injectable meds for you to give at home) that will give her a fighting chance even with a serious illness like this. You could also see if there is a low-cost SPCA clinic in your area that could help, or apply online for Care Credit, which is a payment plan accepted by most vet clinics: www.carecredit.com If going to the vet is not possible at all, then I would just try to keep her warm and comfortable and do the best you can to keep her hydrated. You can continue giving Pedialyte if she's able to keep it down, and you might also try offering her some warmed low-sodium chicken or beef broth to help encourage her to drink. Plain boiled chicken or chicken-flavored baby food can also be offered if she's interested in eating at all, as these are very bland and should not upset her stomach further.

She may either be going through a growth spurt, or she may have low glucose. If she isn't eating at least 3/4th of her normal diet, then I would be concerned about possible low glucose or another neurological condition. You can also offer her some karo syrup (only about 1 tsp) on her gums if her energy seems really low, once every 6 hrs until you can get her in the vet to be seen. I’m so sorry to hear about Marley. Unfortunately this is a potentially very bad situation. These tiny guys get low blood sugar, low blood volume, and low temperature so easily. These can lead to shock and death pretty quickly. I urge you to take her in to a 24 hour emergency clinic as soon as possible. They may want to start active warming, place an IV, and give glucose and fluids straight into the IV. If taking her in is out of the question, apply Karo syrup or honey to the gums, get a thermometer (or sacrifice one you already have). And warm her up with a towel over a heating pad or hot water bottle. Take a rectal temp every 15 minutes and keep warming until her rectal temperature is 99F. Under NO circumstances should the heat source touch her directly as she can burn easily. If she can hold her head up and seems alert, offer water in a bowl to her face at least once an hour. Small frequent hi-calorie meals (such as nutrical or canned puppy food) should be offered all night. Sadly, this all may still fail without IV fluids and other veterinary intervention. Worse yet, I have temporarily pulled little guys like this out of shock two or three times only to have them finally pass or the owners euthanize. I suspect that these guys often were born with an organ abnormality that was unknown.
