My Shih Tzu puppy has a red eye. Should I be worried or wait for vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 19 days old

I have a 10 weeks old Shih Tzu boy and I’ve noticed his eye has gone a bit red, should I be worried? He has an appointment next week but should I see someone sooner, and what can I do to help him?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Olaf his adorable!

From your picture I am not worried. In some breeds the eyes can get a little red with excitement, when they are tired, etc. As long as Olaf's eyes do not seem painful: excessive blinking, holding an eye closed, excessive tearing, yellow or green discharge or rubbing them it is fine to wait until your appointment next week.

I hope this helps and I wish you and Olaf the best!
