My 8-week-old Shih Tzu puppy won't eat or drink. What should I do?

Hello i just got a 8 week old shih tzu i cant get him to eat or drink anything im using the same food products he was being fed before i got him

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bleu Smith. I recommend that he see a veterinarian today. The stress of a new home and environment can cause a low appetite. However, so can illness. Being such a young puppy, it will be easy for his blood sugar to drop too low from not eating. I recommend placing some karo or maple syrup on his gums and seeking care I hope this information helps!

If he is eating canned food, there more moisture in it so they do not drink as much compared to dry food. Also being so small he does not require alot of water. If he is eating well then I would monitor for the bowel movement, it should be coming. Just make sure there is no diarrhea and he is not straining to go. If he does not have a good appetite then I would a vet check him because with out food his blood sugar can drop causes more weakness

Congratulations on your new addition! It isn't unusual to have a decrease in appetite and bowel movements when a pet changes homes. This could last a couple of days, but I would be concerned if it lasts any longer than this. I would add a small amount of plain boiled chicken and white rice to the food and see if this will stimulate Marvin's appetite. If he still doesn't start eating then I would recommend taking him to a veterinarian for an exam. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You can add about 1 teaspoon of canned pumpkin to his meals which may help with mild constipation. At this point, you can start offering him any puppy dry or canned food. As a puppy, it is not unusual for puppies to be very active which is ok at that age. Have a great day!

Hi. Poor baby :( That definitely is concerning especially for a puppy. There are obviously alot of causes for not eating. It could range from parasites, to dietary indiscretions, to viral infection (parvo), and many other illnesses. I would recommend getting Jax seen tomorrow at your vet or the ER because puppies can get dehydrated, hypoglycemic and decompensate quickly. Sometimes puppies can have a slight decrease in appetite when they first come home since it is a big adjustment, however it sounds like you've had her a few days. Given her age and her breed I'd recommend seeing a veterinarian to make sure she doesn't have low blood sugar, parasites, or another medical problem affecting her appetite. If she also seems weak, lethargic or disoriented you should see an emergency veterinarian as soon as possible. She is adorable!

Get some honey and smear it on his lips and gums and get him to a vet immediately. Small breed puppies can get low blood sugar very easily and if he does not have low blood sugar it won't hurt anything. Keep him warm and dry and get him to your vet now.
