My young Shih Tzu licks grass & has slimy poop. Should I worry?

Hello. If Ziggy's feces has otherwise become normal then a bit of slime can be normal. I would just continue to monitor and if the slime continues for more than a week then getting a fecal sample checked might be a good idea. Best of luck!

Hi and thanks for posting! This may be due to him ingesting a large amount of grass and perhaps other plant material which irritated his gastrointestinal tract. Sometimes there can be a a bit of blood present when the intestinal tract is inflamed or irritated. Certainly, this could be related to an ongoing parasitic infection or may have another cause entirely. You may try deworming him again with a broad spectrum dewormer such as Drontal Plus as well as placing him a on a bland diet of boiled chicken, rice, and plain canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) for a couple days and continue to monitor his signs at home. If the bloody stools do not resolve or he develops any further signs such as lethargy, vomiting, decreased appetite, then there is something more concerning going on here and will need to be worked up with his veterinarian. Hello! I wouldn’t be too worried about lily at this point. if she is otherwise feeling good, I might try her on a very bland diet for a few days. An example of a bland diet would be boiled skinless chicken breast and steamed white rice (1 part chicken to 2-3 parts rice). If the diarrhea is persisting or if her appetite decreases or if she begins vomiting then I would have her veterinarian evaluate her. It would be a good idea to bring a sample of her stool in if the diarrhea continues so her vet can screen for intestinal parasites. I hope lily is back to herself very soon!

An isolated night of some vomiting and diarrhea, while stress for you and your, may not be extremely significant. I would consider switching Gizmo to something very bland like boiled chicken and rice to see if he can keep this down. You may even consider completely fasting him for 24 hours (continue to allow water). If the vomiting and diarrhea continues to persist for a total of 24 hours or if Gizmo is unable to keep down anything, you definitely need to get him into the vet for a diagnostic work up. I would describe the symptoms in detail over the phone, as it is possible your vet may want Gizmo to stay in the car until the Parvovirus can be effectively ruled out. This is an extremely contagious condition that often presents with vomiting and smelly diarrhea in young, unvaccinated puppies. Hope this helps and that Gizmo turns out fine!

I'm assuming you are describing a reddish mucousy stool from your description or "raw chicken liver." These changes may indicate blood and mucous in the stool which is often a sign of colitis. Colitis can be caused by intestinal parasites, dietary sensitivity, bacterial overgrowth, or infection. It would be best to have Ginger examined by a veterinarian and to have her stool sample checked for parasites. You can try offending a bland diet of boiled chicken and sweet potato or rice for a meal or two. However, if the diarrhea does not resolve, worsens or any other signs of illness develop (like vomiting, lethargy, or low appetite) then Ginger should see a veterinarian right away. This could be due to the presence of mucous coming from the last part the intestine. It may be compatible with colitis, which is an inflammation, usually dietary related. As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.
