My Shih Tzu has runny diarrhea but seems fine. Should I worry?

"Simple" diarrhea can frequently be managed at home by withholding food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet (1:1 ratio of plain boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice). Feed in small, frequent amounts waiting at least one hour between feedings. Continue feeding until the stool is normal. Transition slowly to the regular diet. If the diarrhea doesn’t stop or other symptoms (vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite, etc.) develop, see your veterinarian.

Hello, sorry to hear about Paigee. It most instances, bloody diarrhea is caused by inflammation of the GI tract. If frank blood, this is most often a large intestine inflammation, if dark blood, then this could be from the stomach or small intestine. Most often, inflammation of the GI tract is caused by some form of dietary indiscretion and is self limiting to a few days. If signs worsen, if she develops vomiting, innapetence, pain or lethargy, then she should be seen by a veterinarian. If she has frank blood diarrhea, she should be seen by her veterinarian. In the interim, you may try to feed her a bland diet of plain white rice, skinless and boneless boiled chicken, and low fat cottage cheese for the next 3-5 days. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Hello. This may have been a one off episode of diarrhea, only time will tell. I would stop all treats, table scraps, dental treats, rawhide snacks, etc. for the time being, & just feed his regular diet. If he has an appetite, but has another bout of diarrhea, then start him on a bland diet of 75% cooked white rice ( not Minute or instant rice ) & 25% plain cooked chicken or a little low fat cottage cheese. Feed this for a couple of days to see if the diarrhea resolves, then reintroduce the normal diet. If Paco stops eating, starts vomiting, or the diarrhea just will not resolve, please see your veterinarian for further diagnostics. An abrupt change in diet could cause diarrhea, but there are many other potential causes as well ranging from intestinal parasites to infections. If the diarrhea is not resolving in the next few days or if Appa continues to act lethargic you should have him examined by your vet.

I'm assuming you are describing a reddish mucousy stool from your description or "raw chicken liver." These changes may indicate blood and mucous in the stool which is often a sign of colitis. Colitis can be caused by intestinal parasites, dietary sensitivity, bacterial overgrowth, or infection. It would be best to have Ginger examined by a veterinarian and to have her stool sample checked for parasites. You can try offending a bland diet of boiled chicken and sweet potato or rice for a meal or two. However, if the diarrhea does not resolve, worsens or any other signs of illness develop (like vomiting, lethargy, or low appetite) then Ginger should see a veterinarian right away. It is possible sweetie had a case of gastric upset. This could be due to something sweetie ate or got a hold of. IF she is eating, drinking, and no longer vomiting I would not be concerned. IF she continues to vomit or have blood in her stool i recommend takin her to a vet for medications to resolve the diarrhea.

I'm sorry to hear that Lola isn't feeling well. Obviously, taking her to the vet for an exam would be the ideal scenario, but given your current circumstances, I understand that that might not be possible. Diarrhea can be caused by a multitude of different issues, including parasites, an upset stomach from a virus, eating something unusual, or other internal diseases. Since Lola is still drinking some water, I would encourage her to drink a bit more by putting a small amount of low sodium chicken broth in her water. Just be sure to change the bowl every few hours so that it doesn't spoil. You can also give her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice to try to help settle her stomach. At only 5 pounds, she should eat a total of 1/2 cup of this mixture per day, so divide that into 3-4 smaller meals. However, if she refuses to eat or drink, begins to vomit, or becomes more lethargic, you'll have to seek emergency veterinary care.
