Why is my Shar-Pei snorting after recent entropion eye surgery?

Allergies, polyps, and sinusitis are all possible causes of Penelope's symptoms. She may also be dealing with a foreign body (such as plant matter) stuck in the nose, or a growth of some sort other than a polyp. Since it sounds like she is otherwise doing well, I would not be overly worried, but her symptoms warrant a trip to the vet to help figure out what is going on. The upper teeth have roots that extend very closely to the nasal passages and if Custard had any teeth removed, then it's possible that there could be some irritation, or bleeding in the nasal passages. This often heals soon after the surgery, but may take a week or two. If he didn't have any teeth removed, or his problem worsens over the next week, then it would be worthwhile to have your vet examine him. Signs of a worsening problem are an increase in sneezing, coughing and discharge from the nose. This can be a sign of infection, so it's possible that he will need additional treatment. Otherwise, it's best to monitor this condition for now and see if it improves in the next week. I hope that helps and all is well with Custard.

He most likely has reverse sneezing. Look up some YouTube videos of dogs reverse sneezing. See if it looks like it’s the same thing. If so, it is nothing to worry about and has nothing to do with the surgery or the donut he’s wearing. The surgery appears to be healing just fine. Hooe this helps. Best wishes.

A reverse sneeze can be caused by irritants in the upper airway region so if there has been an increased amount of dust in the air this could potentially be causing the symptoms you are seeing. An environmental allergy or an upper respiratory infection could also lead to these symptoms. A reverse sneeze should resolve within a short amount of time. However, if it persist or worsens, I would have a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. It would be unlikely that the antibiotics are the cause of her sneezing and breathing issue. She could have allergies, an infection, foreign body in her nose, etc. Call your vet and give him/her an update. Your vet may be able to prescribe an anti-histamine to see if that helps. If not, she should be rechecked by your vet to determine the cause and treat.

I had a patient that had managed to get a piece of carrot up into his nasopharyngeal area. After a week or more of reverse sneezing we did a nasal flush and found it. I have also seen nasal mites and cancer cause these signs. If he doesn’t improve soon then a nasal flush or rhinoscopy would be indicated. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

While she could be experiencing allergies as they are common this time of year, a respiratory tract infection is also possible. Given how frequently her symptoms are occurring, I worry that she does have an infection. If so, she may need an antibiotic. In the meantime, you can place her the bathroom while you shower. The warm humid air can help lessen any congestion she may have. I hope this information helps!
