My dog grunts, sneezes, snores, and reverse sneezes. Is it serious?

Based on your description it is likely mild allergies causing some nasal drainage. Over time allergies can also cause rhinitis in pets, which presents as snorting (stertor) sounds. If things don’t improve to seem to be bothering Remus your vet can prescribe some antihistamines to try or even some allergy medications. Secondary bacterial infections can also develop which typically cause decreased appetite, a low grade fever sometimes and yellow or geeen drainage from the nose. If you see those symptoms then it’s best to get him treated soon with a short course of antibiotics. Otherwise you may be able to wait things out to see if his allergies clear up. I'm wondering if Daisy might be reverse sneezing when she's making this new noise. A reverse sneeze and a sneeze can have similar causes - anything that irritates the nose and throat including allergens, upper respiratory infections, nasal foreign material like pieces of grass or even parasites can all cause sneezing and reverse sneezing. I usually don't get too concerned about either one unless there is also nasal discharge or the sneezing/reverse sneezing is occuring frequently enough that it seems to be affecting the pet's ability to rest. If so I think that your best bet is to see a vet unfortunately.

A reverse sneeze can be caused by irritants in the upper airway region so if there has been an increased amount of dust in the air this could potentially be causing the symptoms you are seeing. An environmental allergy or an upper respiratory infection could also lead to these symptoms. A reverse sneeze should resolve within a short amount of time. However, if it persist or worsens, I would have a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Pets do not typically exhibit anxiety like this. Snorting can have many causes including allergies, post nasal drip or infection. There is a condition pet commonly have called a reverse sneeze. I recommend to look at videos on YouTube and see if that’s what she’s doing. If she was doing it frequently, or this is out of character for her, I recommend to visit the veterinarian. An upper respiratory infection of some kind is certainly a possibility. It sounds like she may have some inflammation that isn't usually present, Such a short respiratory tract makes pugs vulnerable to inhaled irritants and infections more so than other breeds of dog. I recommend getting her seen by your vet if the symptoms persist more than a few days and sooner if she develops signs of illness, such as a nasal or eye discharge, lack of energy and/or appetite. Also, with her rubbing her face more, her eyes are more vulnerable to injury and irritation than other dogs, so make sure she doesn't hurt herself rubbing her face.

It would be unlikely that the antibiotics are the cause of her sneezing and breathing issue. She could have allergies, an infection, foreign body in her nose, etc. Call your vet and give him/her an update. Your vet may be able to prescribe an anti-histamine to see if that helps. If not, she should be rechecked by your vet to determine the cause and treat.

I had a patient that had managed to get a piece of carrot up into his nasopharyngeal area. After a week or more of reverse sneezing we did a nasal flush and found it. I have also seen nasal mites and cancer cause these signs. If he doesn’t improve soon then a nasal flush or rhinoscopy would be indicated. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
