Why is my senior dog throwing up clear foamy liquid after drinking?

Hello, thank you for your question about Bubba. Vomiting is a nonspecific sign than can be indicative of problems within the GI tract or systemic disease. Problems within the GI tract can include obstruction, eating foreign material, inflammation, parasites, etc. Systemic diseases that make pets nauseous include liver/kidney disease or pancreatitis. If Bubba continues to vomit and unable to keep even water down I would recommend having her seen by a veterinarian. Severe vomiting can lead to dehydration and abnormalities in some electrolytes. Your veterinarian can examine Bubba and then discuss additional diagnostics such as bloodwork and abdominal x-rays to look for a cause for her symptoms. Hope this helps, good luck!

Be sure that you know if she is vomiting (belly goes in and out) versus regurgitation (burps up fluid) versus a cough with a terminal retch (cough is first followed by a gag of fluid). I don't know how old Honey is but she only weighs 5 lbs and that means if she is truly vomiting then she could get dehydrated quickly. If the vomiting is non-stop she should be taken to your Vet if open or an emergency hospital. If it has been a couple of times remove all water and food. Do not offer water for 4-6 hours of no vomiting and offer small amounts and ice chips. Do not offer food until 12-24 hours of no vomiting and offer it as a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day as small frequent meals. If she continues to vomit while fasted or once she starts eating she needs to see a Vet. Causes of vomiting are: intestinal parasites, foreign body (something is stuck and needs surgery to remove), dietary indiscretion, viral or bacterial infections, metabolic conditions, toxin ingestion, food allergy or intolerance. I would recommend having Oliver examined by a vet. Vomiting in an older dog is always a little concerning for issues such as liver or kidney disease, pancreatitis, IBD, etc. Once he isn't vomiting any more, switching to a senior diet is a good idea.

Throwing up can have many causes such as a problem with the stomach and intestines caused by a food over sensitivity, eating something that does not agree with the dog, intestinal parasites, an intestinal blockage, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc.  I would fast Misty for 24 hours and then put the dog on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the vomiting or if the vomiting increases, or if your dog gets lethargic, it needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.

Hi I'm sorry to hear that Sabo is unwell. There are many many potential causes for her to vomit frequently. With her age, I am concerned about kidney or liver issues. But also pancreatitis is common in her breed. Take her to your vet first thing tomorrow. They will run blood tests to check her internal organs.

With your pet's age and status of unspayed, I would actually worry most about a few things: pyometra (uterine infection), kidney disease, liver disease, and diabetes. I would recommend having her seen as soon as you can due to her advanced age. Likely your vet will recommend blood work to make sure everything is functioning normally. Poor Lily sounds quite ill at the moment! I would be concerned that she is vomiting water if her throw is clear liquid, and in a senior dog, that can quickly lead to dehydration. I know it's Monday in Australia, so I would take her into a vet today. She may need a shot to stop the vomiting, and IV fluids for hydration. The vet can also diagnose the cause of the vomiting, which can include severe GI illness, eating something rotten, pancreatitis, or something more serious such as organ failure or cancer.
