Why is my senior Dachshund throwing up clear vomit and not eating?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Sophie! I always worry when older dogs start getting sick. I recommend taking Sophie to the Vet 12 hour fasted for an exam. Bring a stool and urine sample. After the exam I would take belly X-ray and run full blood and urine testing. Causes of vomiting are: intestinal parasites, foreign body (she ate something that is stuck and require surgery to remove), kidney or liver failure, cancer, pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, food allergy or intolerance, dietary indiscretion. Hello, sorry to hear about Vanilla. If she is done this once or twice, you should remove any food for the rest of the day and start her on a bland diet later on. This can be composed of plain white rice, skinless and boneless chicken, and low fat cottage cheese. If this does not improve her vomiting, or if she vomits more than 4 times in one day then Vanilla should be seen by a veterinarian today. This could be caused by a large number of things but in older dogs, inflammation of the intestines, a dietary indiscretion, liver disease, kidney disease, pancreatitis, or even some form of infection could cause vomiting in a dog. Throwing up water is very serious, as it can quickly lead to dehydration. I see that Dolly isn't spayed, and her vomiting and not eating can be due to a pyometra. A pyometra is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. I would have her seen by a vet immediately.

Chronic vomiting is always a good reason for concern, it could be a sign of an internal disease such as a tumour, kidney failure or pancreatitis among other things, you should take Wolfie to the vet in order to get it checked, he will need to have a blood test done so the vet can gather some more information.

Poor Sally. Loss of appetite and vomiting could be due to many things including a stomach illness, kidney disease, diabetes, liver disease, heart disease, and even cancer. I'd take her into a vet asap to get checked out.

Vomiting that often in an older dog that still has an appetite and is drinking water can be a sign of something stuck in the stomach or a mass. If Kruzer ate a ball, toy bone or something in the yard it may not be able to pass and may sit in the stomach causing irritation and vomiting. As this has been going on for a few weeks I recommend taking him in for abdominal X-rays. They should be able to see if the stomach is normal and if there is anything stuck in it. If he's losing weight and not feeling well then I would run a blood panel also to check his organ function. Once they have a diagnosis of the cause of the vomiting they can then proceed with treatment. If he has something stuck in the stomach sometimes surgery is needed to remove it. Not eating and vomiting can be due to a very upset stomach/gastritis, pancreatitis, severe diabetic crisis, blockages of the gut, organ disease, etc. It is important to stop the vomiting and rule out surgical causes and organ failure causes. I recommend you have Peanut to the vet right away, they will likely recommend bloodwork and x-rays. Best of luck with Peanut!
