My senior dog is sneezing blood and clots. Is this an emergency?

Poor Bailey! Coughing up blood along with bleeding from the nose are quite serious, and I would take her into the vet now. This bleeding could be a sign of ulcers, an inability to clot blood, liver failure, respiratory disease, or cancer. Unfortunately, cancer is always a possibly in an old dog, and if she did have cancer that had spread to her lungs, it could cause these signs. I would take her into a vet right away. The vet can do routine blood tests, a urinalysis, x-rays, and possibly blood clotting tests to see what is causing her to cough up blood and have nose bleeds. Once the cause is found, the vet can determine what, if any, treatment is appropriate for her.

It looks like her nose is very dry and cracked. To be safe, I would get her in to see a vet as soon as possible, especially if she's feeling sick otherwise, any unusual lethargy, refusal to eat and drink, vomiting, diarrhea could all point to this being a much more serious condition. I do recommend very gently cleaning her nose and applying a thin protective coating of Vaseline to her nose to help slow the cracking and dryness.

Poor Daisy! She is an older girl, and unfortunately this sneezing with blood in her snot could be due to a malignant growth (cancer) in her nasal cavity. It could also be due to a foreign body, fungal infection, or respiratory infection. Because this has been ongoing for a while, it's best that Daisy is seen by a vet either today or tomorrow. The vet can do a physical exam, blood tests, urinalysis, x-rays, and may look up her nasal cavity with an endoscope to diagnose what is causing her symptoms. Once a cause is found, the vet can discuss treatment options with you.

Sneezing blood is always a concerning sign. It could be related to a serious infection in the nose, bad allergy, it could be due to a foreign material in the nose, nasal polyp, low platelet count or even a mass in the nose. If Febie is frequently sneezing with blood, you should take her to your local vets as soon as possible.

I'm so sorry you suddenly lost Aphrodite! It could be she had a tumor in her nasal passage causing the blood when sneezing. It could have also been a bleeding disorder. Without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain but I hope this helps somewhat. Again, I'm sorry for your loss.

Have your vet take a look at her to determine the cause. She could have an infection, especially since she is on prednisone, and need an antibiotic to treat. She could also have dental disease and your vet can do an oral examination to evaluate her teeth.

Poor Cali! It is possible that her nasal passages are simply irritated from her sneezing yesterday as a result of an underlying infection or allergies. However, it is also possible that her nasal bleeding (epistaxis) could be due to more sinister fungal infections, nasal cavity tumors, parasites, or blood clotting disorders.
