My senior dog has smelly, bloody drool. What remedies can help?

It sounds like there are a couple of things going on with Scout at the moment. The drooling and blood from his mouth suggests a dental problem, which can be common in older dogs. It would also cause him to not eat as much, and he would eat the softened food because it won't hurt his teeth as much. As for the thick mucus from his eyes, that can be a sign of an eye infection. Finally the panting can be a sign of being hot or something more serious such as heart disease. It's very concerning to me that you think there is blood in his drool and his eating has decreased. You need to take him into the vet first thing in the morning, this is not something that can be treated at home or should be left untreated. The vet can treat his myriad of problems. Unfortunately there isn't really any way to shrink or remove a tumor without surgery, I have had some veterinarians have some luck in helping to stop bleeding from tumors with a Chinese medicine called yunnan baiyao. I would ask your vet if they feel this would be useful for your dog if the tumor is bleeding.

I am so sorry to hear about Chyna. Your vet may have some recommendations for palliative care for Chyna, which might include a steroid such as prednisone to shrink the size of the tumor (unfortunately this is usually a temporary effect so won't last forever). This may help with the bleeding. Other medications they may consider could include a drug called Cerenia which can sometimes decrease inflammation and help with sneezing in some cases. To help with bleeding the vet may recommend nasal drops with neosynephrine which may help constrict blood vessels, or a chinese herb called Yunnan Baiyao which can help with bleeding problems.

You can have your veterinarian take a look at her and if they agree, antibiotics can be prescribed at that time. This is likely to improve the smell and infection but also improve her comfort. I'm sorry to hear that Lilly is having this issue. Unfortunately. there is nothing you can do about an oral tumor at home. You are correct, you cannot keep her from licking or biting the tumor and there is nothing you can apply to it to stop the bleeding. It is best to consider euthanizing her sooner rather than later. I'm sure this is really bothering her and I'm sure you don't want her last days to be filled with this uncomfortable tumor and wearing and annoying cone.
