My senior dog has a red, puffy eye, but seems fine. What's wrong?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 13 years and 11 months old | 45 lbs

I recently notice my 14 year old beagle mix has one puffy red eye, it’s only red and puffy in the sclera. He hasn’t been acting different at all or acting in pain

Hey there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. What you are seeing is a condition called Chemosis (swelling of the conjunctiva). This can be caused from trauma, insect bites, allergic reactions, etc. If this does not resolve after 24 hours, I would have Charlie examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. It sounds as though Charlie may be suffering from an allergic reaction from something. I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. If an allergic reaction goes untreated it can become much worse and potentially life threatening. If you are far from a veterinary hospital, you can give Benadryl for the time being. It is a little difficult to tell from the photo, but it looks like one of Charlie's eyes is looking upwards and is protruding slightly. This can be caused by damage to the nerves or muscles that control the movement of the eye, glaucoma, or a mass behind the eye. i recommend having Charlie seen by a vet as soon as possible, as eye conditions are frequently painful and can quickly turn into emergencies. In the meantime, you can get him an E-collar or "cone" to make sure that he does not scratch or rubt he eye, causing further trauma. I hope this helps and that all is well with Charlie!

My senior dog has a swollen eye with a mucus bubble. What should I do?

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Trigger! I can't see the bubble you are referring to in your pictures but your description has me very worried. When it comes to eye issues it is best to have the pet seen as soon as possible. From the picture I can tell Trigger's eye is very painful. Causes could be: corneal ulcer than is about to rupture or has ruptured or glaucoma. Both of these issues can be very serious for the health of the eye. I'd highly recommend that Trigger be seen this morning by your Vet. I hope this helps and I wish Trigger the very best!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I’m sorry to hear about Lizzy! The good news is that this sounds like this is more likely a corneal scratch or ulcer than glaucoma. (Probably happened when crashing through the wood pile.) If you have one or can get one from a pet store, put an E-collar on Lizzi to protect it from further damage (scratching/rubbing at the eye). Then get in to see your vet tomorrow. They may recommend a special stain to confirm this idea and will prescribe an eye ointment or drop to help. Best of luck to you and Lizzy!

However, there are some other diseases that really need a very thorough evaluation of the eye to diagnose. I think that if he has not improved on the current therapy, it may be a good idea to check in with your veterinarian. If they are concerned based on their knowledge of his case, they could consider having you consult with a veterinary ophthalmologist. Why is my senior dog's eye swollen and closing? What should I do?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Cosmo. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian today. I worry that he has an abscess. A tooth root abscess is common in that area of a dog's face. This can occur when there is damage to a large tooth in the back of the mouth. The root can become infected causing a swelling below the eye. Of course, there could be another cause. The veterinarian will examine him and may recommend anesthesia to determine if thisbis the case. The teeth can be cleaned and x-rays taken to look for an abscess. If present, the tooth will likely be extracted. I hope this information helps!
