My senior dog is peeing less, but acting normal. Is this okay?

Hello. I am so sorry for your worries with Romeo. It is hard to put any significance to one urine spot because the amount of urine produced throughout the day can vary quite a bit. If Romeo was not very thirsty, then not as much urine would be produced. Wet food has a significant amount of water, so this can take the place of a drink or two from the water bowl, again affecting the amount of urine actually produced. Just keep an eye on things & if anything changes, then have him evaluated. If your veterinarian deems it necessary, he will most likely collect a urine sample, & possibly also a blood sample to check on Romeo's overall health. If he is acting normal in every other way, I would not be overly alarmed. I tend to worry if a dog is urinating much *more* than they used to, or is not urinating at all. If you are concerned, you can have him checked by a vet to make sure there is no indication that he is ill and therefore drinking less (and perhaps dehydrated, which could cause him to produce less urine) - but if he is still acting completely normal, this slight decrease in urination is probably within the range of normal. His urine is very dilute from drinking lots of water. If he had a problem with his kidneys, you could see blood in his urine, peeing multiple times but in small amounts, lethargy, and possibly a loss of appetite. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I’m not very concerned about this since there are no other signs. It could be a normal change related to his maturing and/or changes in drinking habits. Go ahead and submit the urine sample to your vet to be safe but my guess is that nothing will come up. If you do see any other signs, I’d definitely take that more seriously and recommend an exam and urine test at that time. Those signs may include: increased frequency, increases amounts of urine/increased drinking, blood tinged urine, straining to urinate, accidents in the house, etc. Best wishes to you and Bruno Rider!

If he's been vomiting and not drinking much, yes it is possible that he's a bit dehydrated. His urine in the picture does look a bit yellow, but if he is now drinking water and feel better, I expect he will become hydrated again in due course. It's fine to increase his water intake, and you could add some gently warmed, low sodium chicken broth to his food to help with increasing his fluid intake. I hope this helps.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Romeo. Wet food has a very high moisture content. So dogs eating this type of food drink less water than when eating kibble. If he is exercising less, this will cause him to drink less as well. As long as he is eating and acting normal, then you do not likely need to be concerned.
