Why is my puppy's pee stream thinner and faster, but he's fine?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 2 days old | 30 lbs

So my puppy doesnt have accidents , or pain when urination , he’s always had a problem with drinking enough water so his pee is usually a little yellow , but I’ve been noticing lately that his “stream” of pee is thinner that usual and coming out a little faster than usual , not sure what this could be. Going to get a urine sample but I don’t think it’s a UTI since he shows no symptoms what so ever and is eating and drinking like normal , he not lethargic either... any ideas?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I’m not very concerned about this since there are no other signs. It could be a normal change related to his maturing and/or changes in drinking habits. Go ahead and submit the urine sample to your vet to be safe but my guess is that nothing will come up.

If you do see any other signs, I’d definitely take that more seriously and recommend an exam and urine test at that time. Those signs may include: increased frequency, increases amounts of urine/increased drinking, blood tinged urine, straining to urinate, accidents in the house, etc.

Best wishes to you and Bruno Rider!
