Is a small pee puddle normal for my Shih Tzu after eating wet food?

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 8 years and 10 months old | 12 lbs

Is this a normal puddle for a 12 pound Shih Tzu? He hasn’t drank any water today yet but had a serving of wet food few hours ago. He just peed this puddle. Can urine puddles vary in size? Sometimes he pees larger puddles than this. He is eating good and playful. He’s not straining far as know, flow is not interrupted while urinating. Thank you

Hello. I am so sorry for your worries with Romeo. It is hard to put any significance to one urine spot because the amount of urine produced throughout the day can vary quite a bit. If Romeo was not very thirsty, then not as much urine would be produced. Wet food has a significant amount of water, so this can take the place of a drink or two from the water bowl, again affecting the amount of urine actually produced. Just keep an eye on things & if anything changes, then have him evaluated. If your veterinarian deems it necessary, he will most likely collect a urine sample, & possibly also a blood sample to check on Romeo's overall health. Hello. I am so sorry for your worries with Romeo. Urine volume can absolutely vary during the day(s). What usually concerns us is if there is an increase in water intake & also increased urinations which could be an indication of some underlying condition. It is impossible to make any conclusion based on your picture, but I see nothing that overly concerns me. If he is acting & eating normal, there is probably no immediate concern right now, but as a pet ages, things can start to happen. If it has been a while since Romeo has seen a veterinarian, it may be time for a good wellness checkup. This would include blood work & a urinalysis. His urine is very dilute from drinking lots of water. If he had a problem with his kidneys, you could see blood in his urine, peeing multiple times but in small amounts, lethargy, and possibly a loss of appetite. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I’m not very concerned about this since there are no other signs. It could be a normal change related to his maturing and/or changes in drinking habits. Go ahead and submit the urine sample to your vet to be safe but my guess is that nothing will come up. If you do see any other signs, I’d definitely take that more seriously and recommend an exam and urine test at that time. Those signs may include: increased frequency, increases amounts of urine/increased drinking, blood tinged urine, straining to urinate, accidents in the house, etc. Best wishes to you and Bruno Rider!

My Shih Tzu is pooping less, has hard, dry stool. Is this normal?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Romeo. Constipation is an extreme form of constipation. This occurs when the dog is not able to pass any feces at all. Based on your description, this does not currently seem to be his problem. However, you do not want this to occur. Feeding more moisture such as canned food or warm water over the dry kibble can help to soften stool. You can try a low dose of his lactulose, but beware that it can cause diarrhea.
