My senior Yorkies pee and bark when left out. Should I crate them?

Keep him on a leash attached to your hip until he is completely house trained. Watch for his cues that he may need to use the pad or go outside. This can be circling, sniffing around, pacing and/or whining. To get him to use the pads consistently, you can try a spray attractant. There are many different options and opinions on the best way to house train - I personally think using a crate is best and quickest. Basically you have pup in the crate (no pee pad) whenever you aren't actively watching him AND take him out to go to the bathroom every hour, after eating, after drinking, after waking, after playing, or any other times he pauses for a second. The rest of the time, you're either 100% focused on him, or he's in the crate. As long as the crate is the right size (easy for him to turn around, but not a whole lot bigger), he won't eliminate in his resting place. if you go with the play pen method, it relies on him just figuring it out a bit more and may or may not work as well or quickly. Instead of having a clear resting place it's also a potty and meal place - some dogs do great with this and others not so much.

You are right in that crate training is usually used for teaching a dog how to hold it better when potty training. If you're looking to get Siao-lyn used to an indoor potty area, I would simply take her to the area as you would take her outside, so that she learns to go there. However, there may be some confusion over this if you are taking her both outside to potty, and inside. Instead, it would be better to try and take her outside more often so she doesn't need to hold it so long inside. Once she is older, she will be bale to hold it longer over time, and wouldn't need the indoor potty unless you plan to have her go there exclusively, anyway.

I am not sure whether you want to train Baylee to the pad or to go outside. EIther way, you will need to keep her on a leash (you can attach it to your belt loop to keep your hands free). If you want her to do her business outside, when she starts to circle or sniff say something like "let's go outside!" and take her right out to her designated spot. Do not walk her around. Stand in one place and repeat "go outside." When she goes, praise her and bring her back in immediately. By catching her before she goes and preventing her from going in the house, she will get the idea and should start letting you know when she has to go out. Hello. Crate training takes time, so keep persevering. That being said, expect dogs to be able to hold their bladders the number of months they are in terms of hours, as a general rule. They can hold it a little longer at night. Expect to have to wake up in the middle of the night to let him outside. Bring him outside, let him pee, then right back inside into the crate. No playing or else he will get used to that. The whining and barking should subside soon. HAve fun with him!

I recommend to kennel train the dogs and kennel them at night or have them shut in your room if they will not potty in your room. If they will potty in your room then kenneling them is the best thing to do as well. After about a month you can try to let them out again and see if they have stopped the behavior. Spanking is never recommended as a form of training. Ideally, Paco should be physically examined by your veterinarian to diagnose any underlying medical cause for his behavior. Once medical causes have been ruled out, you can focus on behavioral issues. Consider crate training Paco to "remind" him he shouldn't do his business inside. The crate should be just big enough for him to stand, turn around and lay down. If he isn't on a schedule for going outside, start one. Dogs thrive on routine and he may respond favorably to a schedule. Don't leave him unsupervised indoors. Use a leash and attach it to your hip. Watch for his cues to go such as circling, whining or sniffing about. If possible, restrict access to the bathroom or other areas where he is going. Use an enzymatic cleaner, such as Nature's Miracle, to thoroughly clean soiled areas. When he goes outdoors, have a small treat ready and praise/reward him consistently when he does his business in the appropriate place.
