My Yorkie puppy pees everywhere. How do I train him for pee pads?

I am not sure whether you want to train Baylee to the pad or to go outside. EIther way, you will need to keep her on a leash (you can attach it to your belt loop to keep your hands free). If you want her to do her business outside, when she starts to circle or sniff say something like "let's go outside!" and take her right out to her designated spot. Do not walk her around. Stand in one place and repeat "go outside." When she goes, praise her and bring her back in immediately. By catching her before she goes and preventing her from going in the house, she will get the idea and should start letting you know when she has to go out. Be watchful, because each dog comes up with her own way of doing that . . . it may be a bark, a scratch at the door, running back and forth, etc. If you need further assistance with this, just click on the prompt to initiate a consult. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The easiest way is by using the pads and the training spray which makes them identify where they should urinate. I usually recommend that at the beginning you start by adding pads in just one place in the house so that they get used to urinating in only one spot. This usually works very well. Positive reinforcement is of course also important so giving her treats when she does go in the pad is very important so that she associates going in the pad with something positive. Good luck!

You can try an attractant spray on the pads indoors. When it is time to go, spray it on the pad and lead him to it and wait. Once he urinates on the pad, offer profuse praise and a small reward. Be consistent and eventually, he will use the pads indoors when needed. To keep him going outside, offer praise and a small reward each time he urinates or defecates in the designated area outdoors.

A pack-n-play is a form of crate, and if they are crate trained it shouldn't cause undue stress. Don't think of it as a cage. Many dogs are comfortable and crave the comfort of their crate, kennel, or pack-n-play! Also, they learn that they should potty in their crate and they need to hold it. They do not realize that is the rule when they are just out with free reign in the house. You will need to re-start their potty training to break the habit. Many older dogs don't know that peeing on a pee pad is any different than peeing elsewhere - so I don't recommend their use.

The difficulty with pee pads is when dogs have their front feet on it, they think they are good and don't realize their back part isn't on it! You can buy plastic "trays" to put the pads on that has them step up onto it and then they typically are more likely to put all four feet up on it. Good luck!

I would recommend trying to potty train daisy outside. Sometimes it can be hard for dogs to realize the difference between the potty pad and regular floor. However if you want her potty pad trained every time you see her not using the pad take her over to it immediately. Also, you can take her to the pad multiple times through the day and if she pees give her an award like a treat.

You can use a diaper on your dog when you are unable to keep an eye on her. However, if you do this routinely it will be even more difficult to potty train her. Once the doapernis wet it needs to be removed soon so it will not cause urine scalding on the skin. Young puppies need to be walked every hour or so when starting potty training. If this is not feasible for you then I would recommend placing puppy pads around the house if you are unable to walk her outside and/or keeping her to a confined area. Crate training her will also help speed up potty training. Use positive reinforcement, like treats and lots of verbal praise, when she does go outside. It can take a couple of months to get your puppy fully potty trained. The keys to success are patience and persistence. I hope this helps.
