Why won't my 15-year-old dog eat her dry or wet food anymore?

Hello and thank you for your questions about Lady. If lady will only eat the dry food but you are concerned she will not drink enough water, you may try adding warm water to the kibble. If she will eat it that way, then you know she will get the extra water as she eats. You may also try a different brand to see if she will eat their senior canned formulas. I recommend to stick with other high quality brands like Royal Canin and Purina ProPlan. Eukanuba and Nutro are also good brands. If she will eat these diets, you could mix water with the canned food and add it all to the dry food to almost create a soup. If Kayla won't eat her normal dry food but will eat canned food, I'd be concerned that she has a dental problem causing this change in eating. Dental problems can be common in senior dogs, and can include a tooth root abscess, broken tooth, or severe periodontal disease. I see as well that she isn't spayed, and a pyometra (a life threatening infection of the uterus) can also be a cause of a deceased appetite and a reduction in energy. Given the risk of a pyometra in an older dog, the best thing to do for her is take her into a vet today to get the cause of her symptoms diagnosed so she can be treated. Schazi may not be eating this food because she doesn't like the taste, or she could be ill. Not eating is one of the first signs of illness in dogs. I'm not sure when she had her last vet check, but it would be good to have her seen by a vet just to make sure everything is ok with her. If she doesn't have a medical illness, you may have to try a a different brand of food for her to get her to eat. I'd Pepper checked out by a vet. She could have a dental problem causing her to not want to eat her dry food. While it's fine she eats wet food only, because of this sudden change in behavior. it's important to make sure everything is ok health wise with her. Best of luck.

It is possible she's developed an aversion to her regular food due to the recent sickness you've described. I am unsure if her food made her sick or not but I would make sure there are no recent reports of illness or recalls associated with this food. I recommend feeding a bland, easy to digest food such as homemade, boiled chicken breast mixed with white rice. If she eats this well with no vomiting or diarrhea for a couple days, you can gradually mix in her old food to reintroduce it or try a different type of dog food.

Hello. Have you tried any canned, wet or soft-moist foods? Some dogs do seem to prefer this as they age. I would especially try the FreshPet diet as many pets really seem to like it. If he continues to refuse to eat, you should have Dash evaluated by your veterinarian as there could be an underlying reason for his refusal to eat. Thank you for submitting your question. Minxy is such a small dog that she needs to be eating regularly. If her appetite change came after adding the canned food to her diet, I would stop that. She may not be liking it. If you added the canned food to encourage her to eat, then there is a primary problem affecting her appetite. Since she is so young, I would have her evaluated by her veterinarian. She may have intestinal parasites. If she does not have any medical problems, I would try a different diet and your veterinarian can recommend a probiotic to add to her food. Some of them are flavored and will entice a dog to eat.
