My senior dog only eats dry food. How can I improve her diet?

Hello. Have you tried any canned, wet or soft-moist foods? Some dogs do seem to prefer this as they age. I would especially try the FreshPet diet as many pets really seem to like it. If he continues to refuse to eat, you should have Dash evaluated by your veterinarian as there could be an underlying reason for his refusal to eat. I'm not sure if you meant that Kiinley doesn't like her food mixed, but does like it separated, or if she only likes it together, but feeding it in whatever configuration works for her to eat is fine. If she is having trouble eating at all, or keeping food down, a wellness/senior check with your vet is a good idea to rule out any health issues that may be causing her poor appetite. You can also try to sneak in a few "extras" such as a little piece of boiled chicken or carrot.

Schazi may not be eating this food because she doesn't like the taste, or she could be ill. Not eating is one of the first signs of illness in dogs. I'm not sure when she had her last vet check, but it would be good to have her seen by a vet just to make sure everything is ok with her. If she doesn't have a medical illness, you may have to try a a different brand of food for her to get her to eat. Brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. First though, call the vet to make an appointment for a health check. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

Hello and thank you very much for your question. Changing the food to a canned diet is a good idea if you are concerned with in adequate water consumption. You can add a lot of water to the canned food to make it a gruel based diet. I do have a few suggestions on what may help her consume more water. First, you may want to invest in a waterfall or water movement type of water bowl. These types of watering devices can help mimic a running faucet and studies have shown that animals will drink more from this type of device. Second, you could perhaps change the water you are giving. So for instance, if you are giving your pet well water, you would switch to city water or filtered water. Or if you are giving city water, you may want to switch to filtered water for just a while to see if that helps drink more. I hope I have been of some help. Have a great day.

You can try getting Moka a dog water fountain. It’s provides a continual source of fresh water, and it encourages dogs to drink. I have one, and my dogs love it. You can find them online or at a pet store.

The dry food is more nutritionally balanced but you can add things to it to make it more exciting. You can add any of the above ingredients you use to feed her in her fresh diet. I would advise to only add one at a time (ie...one day its peas, another day chicken, another day carrots) so that she doesn't get use to it. You can also add warmed chicken broth, a table spoon of a canned dog food or the ground up loaf type dog foods like Fresh Pet.
