My senior dog has a cut on his face. Is scabbing normal or serious?

While this may be caused by a bite from another dog, from my experience, this looks a little bit more like a wound from nudging something constantly with the nose. Perhaps nudging a door to a crate, or sticking his nose under a door repeatedly. I recommend keeping a close eye on the area, and maybe even getting Bear an E-collar or "cone" so that he does not cause further trauma to the area. I advise against applying antibiotic ointments such as Neosporin as Bear is likely to lick them off quickly. I hope this helps and that all is well with Bear!

This looks like a minor graze in the pictures and should heal uneventfully. Monitor for heat, pain, swelling or discharge which may indicate infection but this would not be expected. Bathe with cooled boiled water or saline to keep clean and fresh if he will allow you

This looks like a papilloma wart that got irritated (ie: she scratched it or something). I would not be overly concerned about it. You are welcome to put some Neosporin on it to help it heal. These "warts" are very common in small breed dogs. As always, you know your dog best, if you are worried then you should have her examined by your vet.

Thank you for your question. From your photo, it appears that Bear has a small skin infection. I recommend cleaning it with warm soapy water. You can carefully trim the hair around the lesion to make it easier to clean. Since you just noticed this, it is hard to say if it is something that has been there and is healing, or if it will get worse. I recommend keeping it clean through the weekend and using a cone or e-collar to keep Bear from licking the area. You can apply a triple antibiotic ointment once or twice a day. If it isn't getting better, you should call your veterinarian on Monday to have it evaluated and see if antibiotics are needed. Make sure you wash your hands after you have touched the wound. Bear could have a scab from an injury, parasites or a minor bacterial infection. Scabs are nature's bandaid, so make sure you leave it alone and when the tissue underneath is healed, it will peel off. Since it is a solitary scab at this point, monitor it and make sure it heal appropriately. If you see more scabs forming or it's getting worse instead of better, take Bear into the vet. If it is something that really causes a lot of stress, have him seen as well. Piece of mind is everything!

Signs of infection include redness, swelling, pain, discharge, and loss of function so if you notice this getting worse or other signs develop, take him back to have him re-evaluated. You can use some topical Neosporin or similar antibiotic ointment on the incision. Just make sure if doesn't contain hydrocortisone or a steroid. Good luck
