My dog has a spot after bath. Is it a skin infection? Should I see a vet?

Based on your photos, it appears that Marley has a skin infection. Hi and thanks for posting! You can try washing the area with soap and water a couple times a day and keeping it as clean and dry as possible. It looks like Bear has been licking the area frequently which may be a reason why it is not healing as easily, so I would try and keep an E-Collar on her to prevent her from licking and bothering the lesion. Certainly, if despite your best efforts it is not healing properly or is worsening, Bear should see his veterinarian to have the lesion evaluated. That looks more like an infection either from a bite wound, a puncture wound, a foreign body stuck under the skin or perhaps a very deep fungal infection. I recommend to have Baloo see his veterinarian today. The doctor may be able to tell what the cause is by palpation and perhaps aspiration of some fluid. Then appropriate treatment will be given. It may be helpful to remove the hair from this area and keep it clean and dry. It could be a resistant faction or even something like a fungus. If removing the hair and he didn't clear and dry is not helpful then Bear needs to be seen by a veterinarian.

Hello and thank you for your question about Bear. Unfortunately the picture is blurry so I can't get a good idea of what I'm seeing. It looks red and circular but I"m not certain. In general, a sudden red spot or rash could be several things including fleas, allergies, skin mites, bacterial infection, ringworm (which humans can get) or endocrine disease. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. You can wash the lesion(s) once a day (not his whole body, just the lesion). Also protect the area from trauma by having your pup wear an elizabethan collar at all times. If the lesion does not start improving within a week or if it is getting worse, have him examined by the veterinarian. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

I agree that the lesion is concerning. It looks like it could be a bacterial or a yeast infection. I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. In the meantime bathing in an antimicrobial shampoo such as chlorhexidine or salicylic acid would be a good idea. This can be found in the human shampoo aisle in the dandruff area. It looks like the skin in this area has become infected. It could have started as a simple wound, like you said, and then progressively became infected. To help the area heal, keep the wound clean and dry. Wash it 2x a day with a gentle antibacterial soap. You can apply some triple antibiotic ointment to it as well. You will need to keep Boomer from licking the area as best as you can. The best way to do this is by placing an E-collar on him. If this does not help the area heal in 3-5 days or if the area around the wound is swollen at all, I would recommend taking Boomer to the vet to have it evaluated.
