Why does my senior dog have a black scabby patch on her face?

This looks like a benign wart that is very common in older dogs. Sometimes they scratch at them and cause some irritation which I think that is why there is some scabbing there. I would just monitor it for now and point it out to your vet at her next exam.

Poor Poppy! Dogs can develop skin conditions at any age. In older dogs things such as endocrine diseases and food allergies are more common. If you notice the lesions are getting worse, then I would recommend to have him seen by his veterinarian. The doctor will take a look at him and get a thorough history and may recommend some blood tests if an underlying cause is suspected. The doctor will also recommend treatment for the lesions. At home, washing the lesions in an antibacterial hand soap and rinsing them well once a day can help to exfoliate and cleanse the skin. You can apply a dab of coconut oil and rub it in well once the skin is dry. You need to make sure however that he does not lick the coconut oil. According to the picture this looks like a wart that Lady scratched and now has a scab on it. Since she is bothering with it and seems uncomfortable I would take her to see your veterinarian. They can make sure it is nothing else like a scratch that got infected or a different type of growth that go infected and scabbed over. They also will be able to give her a topical ointment to place on the area to help with any type of infection. If this is something that continues to bother her or scab over I would recommend removing it so it does not continually get infected and bother her. If she is scratching at it I would put an e-collar on her so she does not make it worse. As dogs age it is very common for them to get more warts like these, some may bother them while others will not.

Hello. I am so sorry for your worries with Chloe. If this scab has been there for a while, I would definitely have your veterinarian check this out. It could be an infection, abscess, a burn, dermatitis, or even possibly skin cancer. In an older dog like Chloe, unless there was a recent trauma that might explain this, I would highly recommend having your veterinarian check this out soon. Thanks for sending the picture! It appears to be a wart like growth with a small scab on top. These are common in small breed dogs. If it grows or changes rapidly, then I would still have her veterinarian check it out. Otherwise I do not suspect it will be a problem for her. You can try to clean the scab off for her. Good luck!

The pictures look like benign warts, but It is always a good idea to have your vet examine any masses on M. In general, if a wart is bleeding it is worth considering removing it, so it would be worth discussing that with your vet as well. However, we often do not remove warts if they are not causing a problem. Hello. If things are pretty static it is best just to leave the scab alone. Chances are at some point it will fall off. Most likely another scab will form & the process will repeat itself.
