My senior dog's eye is infected and she's not eating. What now?

I am so sorry to hear that Kaimana is experiencing these problems with her eye. Start by placing an e-collar or cone on Kaimana to prevent scratching or rubbing. If the eye is injured, inflamed or infected it is likely painful, this will prompt Her to scratch or rub her eye. However, this could inflict further damage, infection or even an ulceration. An rlceration is a tear in the top layer of the eye and is a serious condition. Because eye concerns with dogs, such as infections, corneal ulcerations, cataracts and glaucoma, can progress rapidly I would have her examined by your veterinarian to diagnose the issue immediately. The precise medication can then be dispensed by your veterinarian. Your vet will use a special tear stain drop to visualise the eye and the top layer to make are there are no ulcerations, and check for other conditions before prescribing medications. Please do not attempt to treat an eye infection at home with any over the counter medications, drops or ointments. This can lead to permanent damage and unnecessary pain or discomfort. Please do not use this or any other antibiotic that is not specifically meant for the treatment of eye infections. There may be chemicals in this that will damage the eye. Eye infections are always emergencies and need to be seen by a veterinarian right away as there is always the danger of loss of eye sight. Your veterinarian will thoroughly examine the eye with an ophthalmoscope, check for injuries to the cornea and corneal ulcers, signs of glaucoma (may measure intra-ocular pressure) and check for swelling and infection. Poor girl. She may have an internal illness that is causing her to not want to eat and have excessive drinking. Several things could be causing this including a bacterial infection, liver or kidney disease. I would recommend offering her some canned dog food or boiled plain chicken and rice to see if that entices her to eat. However, if she has not eaten after 24 hrs, or seems to be declining at any point, its best to get her seen by your vet for a proper exam and some diagnostic tests (i.e. bloodowork) to help identify the underlying problem so that we know how to best help her. Yes, it looks like Mina has an eye infection and that's likely why the flush isn't helping. I recommend to make an appointment for Mina to see her veterinarian who will likely prescribe antibiotics for the eye. Infections can be caused by bacteria, dry eye or even a scratch on the cornea. The doctor may know the underlying cause just be examining the eye but sometimes diagnostics are needed. You should also make sure Mina is not rubbing or scratching at the eye as this may make it worse. Get an elizabethan collar if needed. I am so sorry she's not doing well. I don't see what her age is; but if she's a senior citizen, there are a number of things that could be going on that are unrelated to the surgery. I don't know what all your vet has done in terms of diagnostics at this point, but if bloodwork has not yet been performed, talk to your vet about maybe doing some to further investigate. I'm concerned that she needs additional medical care, and I'm sorry there isn't more that I can offer for you to do at home-- offer her soft, easy to digest, yummy foods such as boiled chicken and white rice, warm it up a bit, put broth on it. Make sure she's got water to drink within reach of her. If your vet isn't able to see you on an emergency basis, you may have to drive to somewhere that offers an emergency facility. It's also serious she doesn't want to eat, and that could be caused by a systemic illness, infection, or inflammation. I would see if there is a low cost clinic in your area, ask your vet if they will accept payment plans, contact a local animal shelter for help, or apply for credit to afford the vet. I would see if anyone can loan you at least $10 each, and if you can get a number of family and friends to loan you that amount, you could raise enough to see a vet. She does have to see a vet ASAP, and I hope that my advice helps you find the money to afford a vet.

I am sorry to hear about your dog! I think you need to recheck with your vet if the initial treatment is not working. Your vet may need to do some additional testing such as a culture of the eye if infection is still a concern or testing of tear production. A different eye medication may be needed to treat this condition.
