Senior dog's eye infection won't heal, skin splitting. What to do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Our 11 yr old Lab has an eye infection that began a few weeks ago. Vet supplied ointment that doesn’t work. Infection is now splitting skin approximately 1 1/2” from corner of eye. Need advise. Picture follows.

I am sorry to hear about your dog! I think you need to recheck with your vet if the initial treatment is not working. Your vet may need to do some additional testing such as a culture of the eye if infection is still a concern or testing of tear production. A different eye medication may be needed to treat this condition.
