Why is my senior dog not eating, tired, and drinking a lot of water?

Poor Lyl. There are so many things that can cause not eating and lethargy so it is hard to say for sure what is going on. I would make sure her gums are pink - if they are white, yellow or grayish blue then she is in critical condition and needs to go to the emergency clinic. Otherwise, you can try feeding her some plain boiled chicken (no bones) and white rice tonight and see if she will eat it. If not, then I would have your vet take a look at her. Your vet will be able to determine if she is in pain anywhere or if something else is going on. They will be able to do bloodwork and even X-rays if needed. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Kakes! Kakes is an older dog and it worries me when older dogs stop eating and drinking. Possible causes are: kidney or liver failure, cancer, bleeding in belly, back or neck pain (Dachshund's are predisposed), viral or bacterial infections, a fever, lyme disease, pancreatitis I think it is best to have her seen as soon as you can, today preferably, by a Veterinarian. After their exam they will recommend appropriate testing to figure out WHY she has stopped eating and is having trouble walking. I hope this helps and I wish you and Kakes the best!

Hi, she is so beautiful and does not look her age at all. I wonder if she is feeling a bit anxious as she seems to settle when wrapped up. The increased thirst and urination needs investigating through a blood sample. Try to tempt her to eat and to keep her comfortable. Hope this helps and that she feels better soon.

It sounds like she needs to be examined and treated by a vet right away. She may be getting dehydrated and need some fluids, either subcutaneously or intravenously. Your vet can also run some blood work and other tests to help determine the cause and evaluated the function of all her organs. It is very concerning that she is not eating and is very weak. I don't think this is something that should be treated at home with OTC medications. If she has a gum infection then she may need an antibiotic to treat the infection. Call your vet or take her to an emergency clinic for treatment. Hope she feels better soon!

Poor Lucy! This could be a few different things. The most common things would be geriatric vestibular disease, an inner ear infection, a cerebral vascular accident (stroke), or a brain tumor. A lot of times it is geriatric vestibular disease which is a disorder they get when they get older that causes imbalance, but it improves with time. Unfortunately, they usually need supportive care to prevent dehydration. If she were mine, I would take her to your vet for an exam. Your vet may want to run some blood work to ensure her organs look okay and there is no toxins involved. Your vet will likely recommend supportive care and possibly antibiotics or steroids to cover all the possible problems. They may want to keep her there to watch her closely. I would give her a few days to see if she improves. I hope this helps!

Poor girl. She may have a urinary tract infection that has been going on for a while so now it is making her ill. Other possible causes of general illness in an older pet are: a closed pyometra (spontaneous infected uterus), or organ malfunction (liver, kidneys, etc). I would highly recommend taking her in to your vet right away for testing (urinalysis +/- bloodwork), to determine what the underlying problem is so that we know how best to treat her. Until you can get her seen you can try feeding her small amounts of boiled plain chicken and rice or slightly warmed cans of baby food to provide her some nutrition.
