My senior dog has blood in his chest and is anemic. What's wrong?

Poor Yogi! It’s hard to know if this is related to the tumor or a problem by itself. Since you saw the blood in the phlegm, I recommend to have him examined by his veterinarian. Even if this is related to the tumor there are medications that can control inflammation and keep him more comfortable. One thing you can do at home that may help us start him on an omega-3 fatty acid supplement for dogs. This will act as a natural anti-inflammatory and improve the lining of the respiratory tract. Any heart disease associated with blood clots may result in your dog coughing up blood. A heartworm infection increases the risk for pulmonary thormboembolism which may cause blood or bloody fluid to be pushed into the airways. Has he been tested for heartworm disease? Dogs with pancreatitis, some types of anemia, lung cancer, systemic bleeding, inflammatory diseases and hyperadrenocorticism will also be at an increased risk for pulmonary disorders which could cause this. Something is definitely causing him discomfort and pain. More advanced testing may be needed. Have you considered taking him to see a veterinary internal medicine specialist? I would be very concerned about Yogi. Has he had any vaccines? There are several possible causes of this in young dogs. Parvovirus is high on my list. Intestinal parasites is also on my list. If the veterinarian isn’t offering diagnostics like a parvo test or intestinal parasite test, I would go for a second opinion. I think that Yogi needs some oral medications and possible food change. in most of the cases, blood in urine is related to bladder infection. Sometimes it can be caused by bladder stones but it is less likely. You need to take your Yogi to your local vets to confirm the diagnosis and the get treatment for him (usually a course of antibiotics).

Hello, sorry to hear about Joba. With hemp-abdomens (blood in the abdomen) about 80% of them are associated with some sort of tumor, most commonly hemangiosarcomas. Of these, 50% have spread to other parts of the body at the time of diagnosis. You can consider having surgery to stop the bleeding, however, this may only buy you 1-3 months. If you are inclined to have further diagnostics and would consider surgery, I would recommend having him re-evaluted by your veterinarian to discuss these options with them. They may refer you to an emergency center as Joba may need a transfusion to be a good candidate for surgery. Hope this helps and best of luck.

I am quite concerned about the anemia as the level is getting low. I unfortunately do not know what the cause is of the anemia as there are many causes ranging from immune mediated anemia, cancer, hemorrhage, etc. Because I do not have Lucky in front of me and am unable to examine him, I cannot make the most appropriate treatment recommendations. There are no over the counter remedies that will help with this most likely as he most likely needs a further workup to pinpoint where the red blood cells are going. Until then, it is a guessing game. I would recommend trying to get him somewhere where there is a veterinarian so that he can be worked up further. Yes, I would be very concerned if Bruiser gagged up a clot of blood, and I would take him into a vet now. It's not normal for a dog to cough up blood, and he could have a severe respiratory infection, a foreign body, or he could have cancer in his lungs. A vet can do a physical exam, routine blood tests, a urinalysis, and possible x-rays to see that is causing him to gag up blood, and can treat accordingly. Please take him to a vet now.
