My dog has anemia, abdominal fluid, and vet says short time. What can I do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Thanks for providing the blood work. Did you allow the belly X-rays. The Vet thinks they felt a mass in Big Mac's belly. That makes me think that he most likely has a tumor in his belly that ruptured and he is bleeding internally. He needs surgery to remove the mass and to biopsy it to see if it is cancer or benign. But he will absolutely need a blood transfusion before surgery. If you can not afford to do further testing, a transfusion and surgery I would highly recommend considering Big Mac's quality of life. He is suffering. That low level of anemia is making him feel weak, light headed and blood in the belly is painful. I am so sorry. I hope this helps you in some way

This could be due to his immune system destroying his red blood cells in a condition known as Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA). Treatment for IMHA typically entails suppressing the immune system along with treating any potential infectious causes. It sounds as if the veterinarian working on Moji is treating him appropriately. Unfortunately, treating anemia can be a waiting game. Blood values need to be monitored every 2-3 days in the initial period and if the red blood cells continue to decline, he will need to be hospitalized for further treatment and closer monitoring. Hello. I am so sorry for Jeter's difficulties. Unfortunately, draining the blood will only relieve the pressure for a very short period of time. The spleen is an organ that can accumulate & hold massive amounts of blood but can also bleed very easily because of disease ( infectious or inflammatory ) or because of cancer. This amount of blood is probably leaving Jeter quite anemic & this degree of blood loss into the abdomen can result in lower oxygen levels to the tissues, also leading to shallow breathing often at an increased rate. An older pitbull with these symptoms probably has a hemangiosarcoma on the spleen. Possible surgery to remove the spleen & tumor may be feasible if there has been no metastasis, but just draining the abdomen is just futile. I am so sorry for your poor Jeter. Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Kane. Fluid in a body cavity could be blood, body fluid, pus from an infection, lymphatic fluid (chyle). Probably not blood since you said the bloodwork was normal. If bleeding occurred Kane would most likely have a lower than normal red blood cell count. Possible causes include liver disease, heart failure, heart base tumor, low protein levels in the blood secondary to liver disease or protein loss into the intestinal tract or through the kidneys (kidney disease), tumor, pancreatitis, leaking of urine from the urinary system, bile leakage, intestinal perforation (hole in the intestinal tract), foreign body, among a few other causes. Your vet can perform an abdominocentesis (stick a needle into the abdomen) and collect some of the fluid and have it analyzed and cultured if needed. Once a diagnosis is made a treatment plan can be put into place. An echocardiogram of the heart may be needed to evaluate the heart for a problem or tumor. I wish you the best of luck with Kane.

If for example, he is suffering blood loss from a mass in his belly. Removing the mass and stopping the bleeding would be life saving. If however, his body is attacking and destroying his red blood cells, surgery may not be recommended. I hope this information helps!

It sounds like Hun is very sick. I am concerned that the seizure means his disease is progressing. Did the vet say what was causing the anemia? The supplements they gave you can support the body, but may not be treating the cause of the illness, such as tick-borne disease, parasitism, or auto-immune disease.

It looks like he is suffering from some liver and kidney values elevations and he also is anemic. (Low red blood cells). Since I do not not his current condition and how long this has been going on, it is difficult for me to give you a survival time. If this has happened quickly and could be a toxin then with aggressive therapy (hospitalization and IV fluids), then these values could go back to normal and stay that way as long as there wasn't any permanent damage. If this has been chronic and his urine is very dilute then this could be permanent damage to the kidneys which is a much poorer prognosis long term. I would still recommend hospitalization and IV fluids if possible. I would talk to your vet about whether he needs fluids, antibiotics, appetite stimulants, anti-nausea medicine etc. I hope this helps and your sweet baby gets well really soon!
