Is 12.5mg Rimadyl every 12 hours a safe dose for my 10 lb dog?

The accepted dose of Rimadyl is about 1 mg per pound every 12 hours, so I would not give more than 50 mg in a 12 hour period. Rimadyl comes in 25, 75, and 100 mg tablet sizes and I don’t know which one you have. If she has already had an appropriate dose and she is still uncomfortable then she should probably be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon. If Clara was 48kg, then this would be the correct dose, but you correct that this would be an overdose for a 48lb dog. I wouldn't worry too much about the dose you gave, but would recommend calling your vet to confirm the correct dosage before giving her any more. I doubt she will have any toxic effects from this dose, but if you happen to notice that she's vomiting profusely, vomiting blood, or has bloody diarrhea, then she will need to go to the vet for treatment. Legally, a pet must be physically examined by a vet before any treatment can be prescribed or recommended. Rimadyl can be used for any muscular or joint inflammation or pain, so it is probably the right choice for Westley. If you get in touch with your local vets, they should be able to advise about the dose for Westley. You will also find Rimadyl dosage on the leaflet, that should be provided with the tablets that were prescribed for Winston.

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Cutting a pill into 1/5 has got to be very tricky even with a pill cutter! I would recommend consulting with Meg's veterinarian about getting her on a different medication that is easy to dose and doesn't require splitting the pill into small pieces. There are a variety of pain medications out there and available for arthritis that are much better and safer to use than paracetamol such as Rimadyl, Galliprant, or Previcox. I would ask your veterinarian if Meg could be transitioned over to a better alternative. I hope this helps!

I understand your concerns - you can definitely read some scary things on the internet! All medications have the possibility of causing problems or side effects - thankfully, for the most of drugs that we use commonly, these issues are extremely rare. Rimadyl is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), very similar to Advil in humans. All NSAIDs have a theoretical risk of causing side effects like GI upset, irritation, and stomach ulcers, as well as liver or kidney issues at very high doses. But just like it would be extremely rare for Advil to cause these problems in humans, it's also extremely rare to see any serious side effects with Rimadyl. This is one of the most commonly used drugs in the veterinary field, and is well-tolerated by the vast majority of dogs who take it. Personally (knock on wood!) I have never had a patient have any serious problems with it, and we use it every single day in our clinic. So while nothing is every 100% guaranteed to not cause any problems, Rimadyl is a very safe and effective drug - just make sure to always give it according to your vet's directions, to minimize the chance of any issues :)

Please do not give ibuprofen. It can be toxic to dogs and with your cute girl being small I am very concerned about an overdose. Your veterinarian should refill the rimadyl or there are also several generic equivalents than may be less expensive. Hi there. So if I'm understanding correctly, it sounds like she just had one extra dose of Rimadyl at 2:30 am Thursday morning - is that right? While it's true that we always want to stick to the label dosage with this medication, as there is a risk of causing serious side effect issues with higher doses and/or giving it more frequently than prescribed, I would generally not expect to see any major issues with just one accidental "extra" dose. Most of the toxicity issues we see with this medication are related to dogs getting into the bottle and eating a large number of pills at once, or with chronic overdosing over a longer period of time. If your girl is acting normal, eating and drinking fine, and not vomiting, then I don't see any major cause for concern right now. I would definitely recommend calling your regular vet to let them know about the extra dose and make sure they don't recommend doing anything different - but otherwise, I would just monitor her for any problems, and stick to the prescribed dosing schedule from here on out. The main things to watch for would be vomiting, or not eating - if you see either of those symptoms, I would let your vet know right away. If you feel like she's still somewhat painful in between Rimadyl doses, you could also ask your vet about getting her a different pain medication that would be safe to give along with the Rimadyl if she seems painful at night before her next scheduled dose, such as tramadol or gabapentin.
