My dog has arthritis, on Rimadyl, still limping. Can I give Ibuprofen?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

My dog had a luxating patella but had surgery for it a year ago. She still favors that leg. I just had X-rays done and determined she has onset arthritis in that leg. She was given Rimadyl for it. She has taken it for 2 weeks. Now she’s favoring that leg again. Can I give her Ibuprofen for now or should I take her back to the vet to get more Rimadyl?

Please do not give ibuprofen. It can be toxic to dogs and with your cute girl being small I am very concerned about an overdose. Your veterinarian should refill the rimadyl or there are also several generic equivalents than may be less expensive. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for your dog.
