Is it okay to give my dog another dog's carprofen for pain relief?

Carprofen and Rimadyl are the SAME medication, she should not be taking both as she will overdose. Rimadyl should be given once or twice a day, not 3 times a day. i strongly recommend taking her to a vet ASAP in order to get her on the proper dosage before you make he serious health damage.

Tramadol is an opioid meant to alleviate moderate pain, however there are research papers now that determined it is not that effective. Carprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication (like aspirin, but for dogs) which is given for certain types of pain such as arthritis. However Carprofen is excreted via the kidneys and if it is to be used, the dog receiving it needs to have a small blood test to verify that his kidneys are working properly. Also carprofen can cause stomach ulcers in some dogs. So unless your vet prescribes these medications for your dog, please do not give them. However, should your vet prescribe those medications for your other dog, you can tell him that you have them and then be informed of the proper dosage to give.

I wouldn’t recommend it -carprofen may not be safe for dogs that have underlying medical conditions like a sensitive stomach, kidney or liver disease. Older dogs are more likely to have an issue like this. If Goose was prescribed carprofen in the recent past it might be a little safer but otherwise I’d recommend talking to your vet first. Sadly there is not another over the counter pain option that I’d consider to be safer so if you feel he’s in significant pain you may want to consider seeing a vet tonight.

Please do not give ibuprofen. It can be toxic to dogs and with your cute girl being small I am very concerned about an overdose. Your veterinarian should refill the rimadyl or there are also several generic equivalents than may be less expensive. The accepted dose of Rimadyl is about 1 mg per pound every 12 hours, so I would not give more than 50 mg in a 12 hour period. Rimadyl comes in 25, 75, and 100 mg tablet sizes and I don’t know which one you have. If she has already had an appropriate dose and she is still uncomfortable then she should probably be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon. I am sorry to hear that Mattie isn’t feeling well. Rimadyl is great for arthritis pain and problems that improve with an anti inflammatory medication. However, without know what is wrong with Mattie there is a possibility that the Rimadyl could make things worse. Such as if she is suffering from liver disease, pancreatitis, intestinal foreign object, or a bleeding abdominal tumor. I know it is hard to watch your dog be uncomfortable, but until there is a diagnosis I would be very cautious about using the Rimadyl.
