My dog's arthritis pill crumbles. How can I ensure proper dosing?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Arthritis can happen in older dogs as you know. However, this is not the only condition that can cause lameness like that. I do not recommend using paracetamol without a veterinary evaluation. There are other arthritis supplements that you can start which would not hurt if this happens to not be due to arthritis and if it is, they can help a good amount. There are several joint supplements out there such as Cosequin and Dasuquin, among others. I would encourage you to start with that and if no improvement is observed, Rodger should be evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day! Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Unfortunately you didn't provide your dogs weight so we can not give you doses. I recommend calling your Vet when they re-open. In the US it is not legal to prescribe medications with out a label and the medications not reconstituted (made in to a liquid from the powder form). Are you in the US? Also in the US we do not prescribe Acetominophen ( https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/tylenol/ ). I recommend calling your Vet regarding that medication as we can't recommend giving it to dogs. Hello. There are many wonderful medication availably to make Sassy much more comfortable in her older years. You can start with a good glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate supplement ( I like Dasuquin by Nutramax ). Then, you can visit with your vet about some of the amazing medications we have to keep our elderly pets so much more comfortable, like NSAIDS ( Previcox, Rimadyl, Deramax, Meloxicam, Galliprant ) to which we can add additional medications such as Gabapentin, if necessary. In addition, adding Adequan injections may actually lower the amount of medications that Sassy might need to keep her comfortable. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about your baby! The good thing is that arthritis has some treatment options that can be quite effective. That diet is excellent. However, the metabolic aspect of it is for dogs who need to lose weight. If Koko Rae is already in a good body condition, you can get the Science Diet j/d that is great for joints but does not have the metabolic component for weight loss. That diet alone can make a huge difference. Deramaxx is usually used on an as needed basis for pain control. You could also consider joint supplements such as Dasuquin and Cosequin. Hi. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If at all possible I recommend a vet visit for Skeeter to do a little senior blood work. Many times this can tell us if there is something wrong that medications or diet change can help. And the vet can also prescribe medication for his arthritis. There is nothing over the counter that is safe for a little dog. Please avoid aspirin even if sold for dogs as many dogs develop severe gastric ulcers from aspirin. Glucosamine supplements such as Dasquin can help but if he is painful her may need something stronger. Sometimes older dogs can benefit from melatonin at night if they are disoriented but discuss the dosing with his veterinarian. I hope Skeeter is comfortable and happy for many more years.

Hello. You can wean her off the pred onto the Metacam , or you can add additional pain medications such as tramadol or gabapentin. I, personally do not like long-term prednisone because of the possibility of side effects, but even Metacam can cause some issues. Regardless of what you & your veterinarian choose for Sydney, make sure periodic blood work is run to pick up any early signs of problems.
