What can I do for my rescued dog's kidney, eye, and skin issues?

Cysteine stones are uncommon and their presences means there's something wrong with the way his body is metabolizing food, or, more like in this case, that his diet was very unbalanced. It takes a lot of work and expensive supplements to may a home cooked diet safe, so there's a good change that was the problem. If you don't feel comfortable with your vet's recommendations, I think it would be good to get a second in-person opinion because it's important to work with a vet that you trust.

Hello, sorry to hear about Memi. I would concerned that there may be something else going on with his eyes that is separate from his kidney disease. If he is very dehydrated, it could be possible that his tear film is very poor and he may need topical lubricants, but I would also recommend ruling out superficial corneal ulcers and inflammation of his eye. If Memi develops any squinting, worsening discharge, eye pain, or redness then he should be evaluated immediately. Hope this helps and best of luck.

It sounds like Nyla could have an eye infection, and that does not have anything to do with her kidney disease. It's best if you can get her into a vet now to get eye ointment to treat it, but if you can't, gently wipe away and discharge with a damp, soft cloth. Get her into a vet as soon as you can.

Pets with renal disease need to eat a special dog food aimed at reducing the work load on the kidneys. Hill Science Diet and Royal Canin both make special formulas for this condition. Some of these pets need intravenous fluids for up to three days. Some of them need supportive care in the form of subcutaneous fluids, anti-acids and antivomiting medications. If she is leaking protein in her urine, she also needs a medication to stop this. Thank .you for rescuing this dog. She really needs a full veterinary exam so you can find out exactly what she has going on and what the best treatment is going to be. She has many issues going on here at once. It sounds like she needs a dental cleaning. There is medication to help with a weak bladder (although she may have a urinary tract infection and not a weak bladder). There are medications available to treat the eyes depending on what is going on with them. The bald spot could be from fleas, mange mites, yeast/fungal infection, underlying thyroid disease, etc. As you can see there are many issues going on here and we cannot diagnose over the internet or recommend treatment without knowing the underlying cause. If she was neglected she probably has had no vaccinations and deworming - should would need those too. That is what you need to do to help her get healthy.

I'm sorry to hear about your dogs diagnosis! Phosphorus is something we try to avoid with renal failure because the kidneys have lost the ability to excrete it properly. Because milk is high in phosphorus I would avoid giving it. A prescription renal diet like you are using is the best food to avoid giving too much phosphorus. If your dog's phosphorus levels are already high you can ask your veterinarian about giving medications like aluminum hydroxide. As far as additional things you can do at home for your dog, subcutaneous fluids may be worthwhile. Your veterinarian can teach you how to administer these fluids. Medications like Azodyl may also be helpful. As an integrative veterinarian I also manage my patients with kidney disease with acupuncture and herbal medicine. Surgically, you can have these removed but this procedure typically costs $3000 per eye in my experience. It is possible that the cataracts could be due to diabetes but without blood work, it is difficult to say. Even if this was due to diabetes, there is no reversing the condition once developed. The skin could be a skin infection or allergy. I would recommend using the following products, which can all be found online to see if this helps the skin. I hope this helps!
