What should I feed my dog after cystine kidney stone surgery?

Kidney disease is best managed with a prescription diet as well as medications to help manage the side effects including antacids, calcitriol and sometimes blood pressure medications. All of these things would require a prescription from a veterinarian. If you feel she has conjunctivitis you can try keeping her eyes clean with a warm wet washcloth and potentially using a saline eye wash to rinse them out. If you feel her eyes are painful or if the condition is worsening she should be seen by a veterinarian.

The appropriate diet here would be the urinary diet either Urinary S/O or Hill's C/D, and then placing your pet on a liver protectant medication to address the liver issues. The liver protectant medication is called Denamarin, and has to be prescribed by your vet. I would then consider getting your pet an abdominal ultrasound to better define what is specifically going on with the liver, so that we know what mode of therapy would be best to manage things going forward, because these values (ALKP, CHOL) can be changed by not just the liver, but also the gallbladder and adrenal glands. Hello again. It really depends on what type of stones are present, such as are they oxylate or struvite? Some stones are harder to manage with diet than others, & of course, it also depends on what is available in your country. Your veterinarian is the best individual to help with this unless you have some laboratory data that indicates what is going on. Hills & Royal Canin Prescription Diets are very popular here. You can definitely add a little plain white rice, but not so much as to dilute the diets, & please do not add any supplements unless directed to do so by your veterinarian. First I think it important to wait until the stone analysis is back before deciding 100% what to do diet wise. Even though she has calcium oxalate crystals doesn't mean the stone will be that exactly, though it is likely. Calcium oxalate stones are the hardest to prevent recurrence. I recommend Veterinary Prescription diets like Royal Canin SO, Hill's c/d or Purina UR. I also recommend monitoring urine pH and concentration. Calcium oxalate crystals form in more acidic (lower pH) urine. If the diet alone won't control the pH and keep it more neutral sometimes we have to add potassium citrate. I think periodic X-rays to check for recurrence are also important. There are many small white dogs that have had many cystotomies to remove calcium oxalate stones. Unfortunately the medications that he need to make him comfortable plus are safe need to be obtained from a veterinarian. Anything you may give at home may interfere with what your Vet may want to prescribe and might not be safe for animals. If you feel he is in extreme pain then I would call your Vet and see if they can prescribe something or see him sooner. Good luck!

If she is still not eating then you should take her back to the vet for IV fluid therapy. And more diagnostics. Make sure they did bloodwork to check her kidneys. An abdominal X-Ray or ultrasound may help to diagnose the issue as well. If her kidney enzymes are elevated, that can make her nauseous and not want to eat. IV fluids will help to flush the kidneys. There are also special foods that can help with kidney issues like hills K/D food. If the kidney issue is for sure due to an infection, then hopefully the antibiotics will kick in soon. Sometimes it’s good to give cephalexin with another antibiotic like Baytril if it is a severe infection.

I am so sorry she's not doing well. I don't see what her age is; but if she's a senior citizen, there are a number of things that could be going on that are unrelated to the surgery. I don't know what all your vet has done in terms of diagnostics at this point, but if bloodwork has not yet been performed, talk to your vet about maybe doing some to further investigate. I'm concerned that she needs additional medical care, and I'm sorry there isn't more that I can offer for you to do at home-- offer her soft, easy to digest, yummy foods such as boiled chicken and white rice, warm it up a bit, put broth on it. Make sure she's got water to drink within reach of her. If your vet isn't able to see you on an emergency basis, you may have to drive to somewhere that offers an emergency facility.
