Is it normal for my newly adopted rescue dog to only pee once a day?

I would not be overly concerned about this just yet. Dogs can hold it for a pretty long period of time. It is not great for them to do so but it should not be harmful at this stage. Are you sure she hasn't gone somewhere in the house? If you are taking her out on a leash, she may not be used to going on a leash - this happens a lot. So you may have to have her off leash. Don't make too much of a big deal when you take her out. Only say whatever word you want to cue her to use the bathroom like "go potty". Do not say or do anything else. Once she goes give her a good treat of something she likes. If you don't have an off leash area then I suggest you do the same as above just on leash instead of off. Try to take her to a spot where other dogs have gone as this usually stimulates them to go. Urination is most important. If she goes 24 hours without urinating you need to get her to a vet. It may be days before she defecates and that is not as concerning. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Hmmm. That is odd. If she isn't straining to go, I wouldn't be worried just yet. Give her time to adjust to being at home again and continue to monitor her behavior. It sounds like everything else is intact and performing the way it should, just reduced urinations. If she is holding her urine, then she should be peeing a pretty large amount when she does finally go. If you have any other reservations, then its not a bad idea to just have her checked by your vet to ensure she doesn't have any stones or anything. However, if she had stones before she should have been placed on a prescription diet to prevent reformation of stones in the future. If she is not currently on a prescription diet, then I would highly recommend consulting with your vet about getting her on one asap! Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Congratulations on adopting Bella!!! If she is acting normally, most likely she has urinated and you didn't see her do it. I would think that if she was having some urinary issue you would notice some signs such as straining, licking her perineal area, possibly scooting. I would watch her closely and make sure she is not urinating in the house when no one is looking or make sure that where she lays, you don't find a urine soaked area. Good luck with Bella.

Hi there! If Penny's lab work has been normal and she's not having any other symptoms of a problem, this may be perfectly normal for her. There are some dogs who only need to urinate 1-2 times per day (one of my current dogs is like this, in fact!) - so although I would say the average dog tends to pee more often than this, there's definitely some individual variation. If she's just now only 10-11 months old, she may be peeing less often now because her bladder control has gotten better, and her kidneys are better able to concentrate urine than when she was younger - which translates to less frequent peeing. So if she seems 100% fine otherwise, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Make sure she gets opportunities to pee at least 3-4 times a day, but if she doesn't need to go, that's okay.

It is common for a decrease in appetite and to not be very playful from being scared but generally does. It affect urination at this point. I would not worry about a BM at this point as it may be too soon but he should have at least urinated somewhere. Are you sure he has not gone somewhere inside? The best thing to do is keep him in a kennel or small room tonight to see if he goes in there once left alone overnight.

For example, it may be that she is eating a diet that is high in protein and low in fiber for instance. This could be easily fixed by feeding her a diet that is higher in fiber. Based on what she eats at this time, defecating just once daily may be just fine. Good luck and have a great day!

If she is acting fine otherwise the it is probably just normal for her. Continue to monitor her and have her examined by a vet if her signs persist or worsen. Your vet can check a urine sample to see if there is a problem.
