My dog only pees once a day after travel. Is this normal?

Pet's info: Dog | Cockapoo | Female | spayed | 9 years old | 30 lbs

Just got back from visiting family and took my dog with. She loves traveling and there were no issues. We got home Sunday and now she is only peeing once per day. Doesnt appear to be in pain, no accidents, plenty opportunities to go, eating and drinking normally. Last year she had bladder stones removed, but nothing since. Her steam is steady and strong. Urine is yellow, but that's common for her. She's not dehydrated. All she does is sniff around. BM normal too. What should I do?

Hmmm. That is odd. If she isn't straining to go, I wouldn't be worried just yet. Give her time to adjust to being at home again and continue to monitor her behavior. It sounds like everything else is intact and performing the way it should, just reduced urinations. If she is holding her urine, then she should be peeing a pretty large amount when she does finally go.

If you have any other reservations, then its not a bad idea to just have her checked by your vet to ensure she doesn't have any stones or anything. However, if she had stones before she should have been placed on a prescription diet to prevent reformation of stones in the future. If she is not currently on a prescription diet, then I would highly recommend consulting with your vet about getting her on one asap!

I wouldn't be concerned unless she is straining to urinate or if her urine appears abnormal. Some dogs are not used to urinating on a leash and prefer to be off leash, but if you don't have an enclosed area for off leash time she will eventually learn to urinate on the leash. She also may have been penned or crated for long periods of time and is simply used to urinating only once a day. I don't think this would be related to being separated from her pups.

My dog pees less after spay. Is this normal for a young dog?

Hi there! If Penny's lab work has been normal and she's not having any other symptoms of a problem, this may be perfectly normal for her. There are some dogs who only need to urinate 1-2 times per day (one of my current dogs is like this, in fact!) - so although I would say the average dog tends to pee more often than this, there's definitely some individual variation. If she's just now only 10-11 months old, she may be peeing less often now because her bladder control has gotten better, and her kidneys are better able to concentrate urine than when she was younger - which translates to less frequent peeing. So if she seems 100% fine otherwise, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Make sure she gets opportunities to pee at least 3-4 times a day, but if she doesn't need to go, that's okay.

My new puppy hasn't peed since I brought him home. Is this normal?

Hello and thank you for your question! If she has not had much to drink, then that would help explain the lack of urination. Sometimes it takes a few days for new dogs to adjust to new surroundings and may not eat or drink as much temporarily. This is normal. However, it has been more than 1 day and he has not urinated at all, then that would be a red flag and cause for concern and would warrant a visit to your veterinarian. Offer fresh water and a good quality food for him to eat. I hope this has helped and try not to worry too much unless he has gone a full 24 hours without urinating. Why is my dog's urine still clear after she stopped eating?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Urine can look deceptively clear, but still be perfectly normal. The only way to know for sure is to collect a sample of urine in a clean container & take it to your vet ( or take Scribbles to the vet for a complete check up ). We can do a quickie urinalysis that includes a measure of the dissolved solids in urine. This is a very good indication of what her overall kidney function might be. But as long as she has resumed eating & drinking, it is not an emergency, but at her age, a good check up might be in order. Take care.

My 5-month-old small breed puppy isn't peeing much. Is it okay?

If you think Sophie is uncomfortable and in pain, I would take her in to be examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. If she is not uncomfortable, as you say, then she is probably just fine. Sometimes the frequency at which dogs go to the bathroom changes based on hydration and behavioral changes (not wanting to go outside much, etc.). I would keep an eye on her and if she begins to develop any symptoms such as needing to go more frequent, straining to urinate, blood in urine, etc. then I would take her in to be seen by a veterinarian.

Why is my dog not excited, drinking little, and struggling to pee?

I'm sorry to hear that Berry doesn't seem to be feeling well. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine her and check a urine sample. If Berry has been holding her urine because she does not want to urinate in the kennel, that can make it more likely that she will develop a urinary tract infection. However, she may just be urinating less if she is drinking less. It's a little hard to tell without more information, but it would be worth having your veterinarian check a urine sample on her just to be on the safe side. Good luck! If she is acting fine otherwise the it is probably just normal for her. Continue to monitor her and have her examined by a vet if her signs persist or worsen. Your vet can check a urine sample to see if there is a problem.
