My newly adopted dog won't pee or poop after coming home. Normal?

I would not be overly concerned about this just yet. Dogs can hold it for a pretty long period of time. It is not great for them to do so but it should not be harmful at this stage. Are you sure she hasn't gone somewhere in the house? If you are taking her out on a leash, she may not be used to going on a leash - this happens a lot. So you may have to have her off leash. Don't make too much of a big deal when you take her out. Only say whatever word you want to cue her to use the bathroom like "go potty". Do not say or do anything else. Once she goes give her a good treat of something she likes. If you don't have an off leash area then I suggest you do the same as above just on leash instead of off. Try to take her to a spot where other dogs have gone as this usually stimulates them to go. Urination is most important. If she goes 24 hours without urinating you need to get her to a vet. It may be days before she defecates and that is not as concerning. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

At this point o would not be too worried about no bowel movement as long as she is eating, drinking and behaving normally. she may have a few accidents as she works on becoming acclimated to her new home but remain consistent and use positive reinforcement and she should adjust quickly.

If she hasn't had anything to eat or drink for a while, it may take some time for her to be ready to poop or pee. As long as she's acting normal and not straining to go to the bathroom, I wouldn't be concerned - she will go when she's ready :)

Some dogs are not vocal due to their personalities. Others will take time to adjust and get comfortable in their new environment. It can be very stressful and scary for little ones to go to a new home, so it takes some time for their personality to shine. At 3 pounds, his stomach is not big enough to hold a lot of food. He should be feed 3-4 times a day to maintain the blood sugar. Once he is bigger you can decrease it back to twice a day. Stress and anxiety can also affect the appetite. Not every dog goes to the bathroom on that schedule. Take him out after he eats, then every 30 minutes to an hour until he gets good control and the concept of house training. If he is playing and stops to sniff and circle, then he needs to go. If you notice any bloody diarrhea or vomiting or he does not eat at all and seems weak, then i would get him checked right away

It is not unusual for them to not poop for a couple days after going to a new home. I would not be overly worried about that just yet. Just make sure he is eating and drinking. Also, get him on a schedule of eating and going outside to use the bathroom so that is it very routine for him. I know it's hard but if you give in to his whining by giving him what he wants you will never get him trained so it is just best to ignore him when he whines. Try to re-direct his behavior with toys or something else that will distract him.

Hello and thank you for your question! If she has not had much to drink, then that would help explain the lack of urination. Sometimes it takes a few days for new dogs to adjust to new surroundings and may not eat or drink as much temporarily. This is normal. However, it has been more than 1 day and he has not urinated at all, then that would be a red flag and cause for concern and would warrant a visit to your veterinarian. Offer fresh water and a good quality food for him to eat. I hope this has helped and try not to worry too much unless he has gone a full 24 hours without urinating. Congratulations on the new girl! This is possibly nothing but stress from all the new changes in her life. Stress colitis (diarrhea from stress) is a very real phenomenon and she may not have eaten/been drinking well in the last couple days due to the transition. If she is otherwise bright and normal looking, give it 48 hours. Try a probiotic like purina fortiflora and a bland diet (half plain boiled/canned chicken half plain cooked white rice) for a few days and I expect the diarrhea to improve after 1-3 days. (Then transition back to her regular diet slowly over 3-5 days.) If at ANY time she is lethargic, vomiting, not wanting to eat, or you have other concerns, you need to go to the vet clinic right away to make sure it’s nothing more serious.
