Is raw egg helping my puppy's foul-smelling poop after parvo exposure?

Hi there! Sorry to hear that Saiko is not feeling well. The clinical signs you describe are concerning when they occur in a puppy as they can be seen with serious gastrointestinal infections such as Parvovirus. Other possibilities include intestinal worms and dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. The sooner these conditions are treated the better the outcome tends to be. These types of conditions should not be treated at home. Raw egg does not prevent parvovirus. For this reason, I recommend that you have Saiko evaluated by your veterinarian to check for these possibilities and to start therapy based on findings. At the very least they can address dehydration if present and start him on anti-nausea medications. Good luck! Keeping my fingers crossed for your boy!

I would not give anything raw as this has potential to cause a bacterial infection in any animal. It is best to keep him hydrated and stick to cooked egg or chicken and rice if he has an appetite. Hydration is key. If he is holding that much down without vomiting then you are doing well.

This could still be from the parvo. Puppies can have abnormal stool on and off for up to a month after surviving the disease. If that’s not the case, often a prescription strength high fiber or hydrolyzed protein diet will help. There are some cases that will not respond to diet, and at that point your vet can discuss referral to an internist, further testing, or medications like Tylan powder to help. I am sorry to hear that Oscar is so ill. His symptoms are very suspicious of parvovirus, which can be lethal to pets. He could also have intestinal parasites. The black stool indicates that he may have some blood in his poop. You should take him to your local vet to get tested. If he does have parvovirus then he needs treatment (i.e. antibiotics, fluids, pain medication) through your vet for any chance of survival. If he only has intestinal parasites, then the vet can prescribe the appropriate dewormer based on which parasites are present on his fecal exam. I hope your puppy gets well soon and does not meet the same fate as your other poop puppy. If your pup does well, then make it a point to get Oscar vaccinated soon to protect him from deadly viruses like parvovirus and others, which are totally preventable through regular immunizations. Hello. It does sometimes take time for the gut to heal after a bad bout of Parvo, & 11 days of treatment says to me this was a tough one. Continue to fed Pluto, but you might want to switch to an intestinal diet or one made for sensitive stomachs & skin. I would try feeding pretty small amounts frequently, rather than 2-3 larger meals a day. Even a tablespoon or two every hour or so might be tolerated better. If your Pluto was not under the care of a vet for this, I would also be concerned about concurrent intestinal parasites, so a good deworming may be necessary. In dogs infected with parvo virus, there can be long term health effects from the infection such as chronic gastrointestinal disease. I would recommend going on a sensitive stomach formula and adding in a probiotic to see if this helps. As always, check the stool for intestinal parasites to make sure a parasite is not the cause. Some will tolerate and others will react like this. The AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) does NOT support the use of raw foods for pets. If you want to feed him some eggs or egg yolks, I would lightly cook them and see if he can keep them down. Start with small amounts added to his regular food. Eggs and yolks are great protein and fat sources. Good luck
