My puppy ate raw egg yolk and got sick. Are raw eggs safe for puppies?

Pet's info: Dog | Spitz | Male | unneutered | 6 months and 22 days old | 7 lbs

Norik ate a raw egg yolk, it was fresh. Now he is throwing up and i see egg yolk in his womit. is it bad to give puppies raw organic egg yolk?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Norik. Some puppies and dogs are extremely sensitive to any changes in their diet. Some will tolerate and others will react like this. The AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) does NOT support the use of raw foods for pets. If you want to feed him some eggs or egg yolks, I would lightly cook them and see if he can keep them down. Start with small amounts added to his regular food. Eggs and yolks are great protein and fat sources. Good luck

If he tolerated it well, this may be ok, However, this should only be used to supplement his regular diet more as a snack to be given every once in a while as opposed to using it mainly as a complete diet. I would continue to monitor him for now. However, if this continues, I recommend you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. The yolk is fatty however, so you need to watch how many calories of dog food you are feeding so Peanut doesn’t become overweight. Also, if you are feeding a high quality dog food (like Hills, Purina One, Royal Canin, or Iams) you shouldn’t need to add eggs. Good luck and kisses to Peanut!
