My 3-week-old puppy is yellow, skinny, and not nursing. Is she sick?

That could be due to a skin infection or possibly just a normal pigmentation change. I would recommend that if this continues, you have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Unfortunately it sounds like Sunny is very very sick. I would recommend having Sunny into a vet right away. They will check for signs of congenital abnormalities (developement problems) and will see if there is anything that can be done. In the mean-time, you want to keep Sunny warm, but not too hot. Make sure she is not lying directly on the heat pad or she will get burns. You can rub some honey on her gums to help get some glucose into her, and see if you can encourage her to suckle on the mom. At three weeks she can be fed semi-solid food (such as royal canin starter food or baby rice and puppy milk replacer). She should also be dewormed if she has not been done so far as intestinal worms could be contributing to her symptoms

Thank you for submitting your question regarding JOJO. She will need to see a veterinarian if she is not eating. She is so young that it is easy for her to become dehydrated. Even though she is drinking, it is not likely enough. The stress of coming to new home can affect a puppy's appetite, but you need to ensure she is not sick. She will likely need fecal testing and deworming to start. Her veterinarian will make recommendations based on these and her exam results. In the meantime, continue encouraging her to eat. This is likely just secondary to the milk replacement you are feeding him. Just keep a close eye on him and make sure he is eating well, continuing to have bowel movements and urinating. Also, make sure you are feeding him every 3 hours. I hope this helps and good luck!

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Some dogs are compulsive drinkers and behaviorally will drink non-stop if allowed. If she is also urinating a lot and is underweight I’d recommend a vet exam, blood work and fecal testing. I’d assume at her young age the drinking excessively is behavioral. If she isn’t active and not in the heat limit her water intake a bit. As for her appetite if she is underweight then I’d be concerned for parasites or a digestive disorder. Shepherds can be affected by pancreatic insufficiency and inflammatory bowel disease. If she is underweight then increase her food by 25% every 2-4 weeks until she had has ideal body condition. That is not a problem but could be an early sign of diarrhoea. As a first approach I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.
