My puppy had something hanging from her rear. Could it be a worm?

That does not look like a normal intestinal worm. Intestinal worms are white or light yellow. I suspect this is something he ate. Wrap it up in a baggie and take it to be examined by your veterinarian. To be safe, have the store checked for worms since some rooms can be spread to humans. It looks like this could be a piece of a roundworm or tapeworm segment. I would recommend taking a stool sample in to be seen by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate treatment recommendations can be made. A dewormer is likely needed.

Dogs can have worms without there being any worms in the poop. Typically it is eggs that are shed, and those are microscopic. To truly rule out worms, a vet needs to look at a sample of Daisy's poop under a microscope. It could also be she has a problem with her anal sacs causing this behavior. I do think it's worth having this checked out by a vet. I hope this helps!

It means that she has worms. I cannot tell you what type of worm because I can't see it. The most common type of worms are roundworms, hookworms and tapeworms. I suggest you keep the worm, put it in a plastic bag and take that along with Pochie to your vet so she can get treatment. You need to take the worm so your vet can see what you are talking about.

You may see Penelope licking her hind end or scooting it along the floor. You may also see actual segments around her back end or stuck in the fur. Occasionally, a dog will vomit up segments as well. Submit a stool sample to your veterinarian for diagnosis and treatment. You will likely need to treat her and the environment for fleas as well since that is typically how abdog becomes infected with tapeworms.

Severe worm infestations will cause weight loss and GI signs. Minor infestations will be asymptomatic. I would recommend to collect a sample of stool and take it in for testing. If you can get a sample that you think has worms in it, then that would be best. Call the Wellness clinic to make sure they can test dogs for GI parasites. The cost of the dewormer will vary based upon what type of worms are present and also where you live. In general the fecal exam is around $40 and the dewormer could range anywhere from $20-60 but once again, these are estimates. Things in New York City cost more than things in Louisville, Ky.
