My dog might have worms. What signs to look for and how to get tested?

I cannot see a worm in your dog's poop, but if you suspect that Tibet may have worms you can either take a stool sample to your vet and have it checked for worm eggs or you can get some dog wormer and worm him according to his weight, I am not familiar with Macedonian law, it may only be possible to get a wormer from your veterinarian.

I would recommend getting a broad-spectrum dewormer for both your puppy and kitten. You can call your local vet to determine the best dewormer for your area. To test them officially you can bring that worm to your vet, along with a poop sample from both your puppy and kitten, and the vet will send the sample away to check for eggs of different types of worms. From that description, it sounds like he may have tape worms. The heartworm test doesn't test for tapeworms (or any intestinal parasites) and the medication is heartgard wouldn't kill tapeworms. A fecal test doesn't always show the worm eggs either for this particular type of parasite. I'd recommend giving your clinic a call to see what they policies are - you may be able to pick up medications from the description alone, or they many need you to schedule an appointment. Finally, make sure Buddy is on a good flea preventative -- he got the tapeworms from eating a flea. He could definitely have just found it outside, but it's worth mentioning!

Hi there. Most of our fecal exams require specific tests that will separate our parasite eggs from the feces. Typically I do what's called a fecal float-as most people do. Under the microscope you would be looking for parasite eggs-but there are various forms and you have to know what you're looking for. If you look it up, there are diagrams on certain types of eggs online-but I always recommend a fecal be done by your doctor in case any are missed at home.

I am so sorry to hear that your new puppy Mia Grace has worms. This can be very troubling for you both. First of all rest assured that worms are very common in puppies. So much so that puppies are routinely treated several times from 2-3 weeks old. It is possible that Mia Grace never had these routine de-working treatments when she was younger and should have them now instead. Dogs make the ideal candidates for worm infestations, as they scavenge, and inspect other animals fences. Most worms that infect dogs -- including roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms, and whipworms -- live in the intestines, so that’s the first place for your vet to look. I would suggest taking Mia Grace in for a check-up with your vet as she is new to your family. The vet will check her overall health and will make sure she is up to date on her vaccines. De-worming tablets or injections are relatively inexpensive and table from $10, depending on weight of your dog. I hope this answer was helpful!
