My puppy is licking and scooting. Does he have tapeworms? What to look for?

If the dewormer you are using does not indicate that it treats tapeworms then it probably does not. Tapeworms segments look like pieces of rice so if that is what you are seeing then she probably has tapeworms. If you are seeing long worms that look like spaghetti then she probably has roundworms. Dogs get tapeworms from eating fleas so if she has tapeworms that means she has or had a flea problem. Since I don't know the exact medications that you are using, it is difficult to know if they can be given together. You could re-post with both medications and then we may be better able to answer the question. You could also take a stool sample to your vet and have it tested for parasites so you know the exact parasite that she has.

Oh my. It is possible she has an intestinal parasites that is causing this. The puking is due to nausea, but I am not sure why she is also foaming, as this isn't commonly seen in pets, unless they have a severe viral infection. I would get her stool tested through your vet to start, and then get her nausea treated with a prescription through your vet as well. Tapeworms are a common cause for itching around the rear end, and are typically easily seen in the stool. They look like tiny white rice or fried rice when they are dried up. Keep an eye out for these, since these are often not seen on fecal exam due to the large size of the worm. Another possible cause for her licking and scooting her rear end is that her anal glands are full. Every dog has anal glands that are 2 sacs located at 5 and 7 o'clock position just inside the rectum. These can get full in some pets because they are not expressed when they defecate, or after the pet has a bout of loose stool. Poor Zippy. He may be scooting because of intestinal parasites (i.e. Tapeworms) or full anal glands (sacks inside the rectum that can fill and cause irritation). Have his stool (feces) checked by your vet for microscopic parasites (invisible to the naked eye) and also the anal glands checked to make sure they aren't full. Both of these should be able to be resolved fairly easy with a vet visit.

I think its perfectly feasible to assume that if you are seeing hair in Figlio's poop that this could be causing irritation of his rectum. Often-times the hair gets stuck between sections of the feces, causing them to string together. This causes the poop to kind of hang out a bit, and subsequent scooting. Check his back end to ensure there is no poop there that didn't quite make its way out. I would also recommend keeping hair ties out of his reach here moving forward to prevent this from continuing to be a problem. Another causes of scooting is an anal gland issue. If you are not seeing any hanging poop then its best to get his anal glands checked and squeezed if they are full. Some dogs have a problem expressing these themselves when they go #2, so they need to have them manually expressed once every 4-6 weeks. Worm prevention is the same for him as any other pet, so you can go with anything really such as Pyrantel Palmoate, Fenbendazole, etc. However, if he is on a monthly heartworm prevention, it already has an intestinal dewormer in it. The worms can be tapeworms and they often look like small pieces of rice. They get these from eating a flea. It can cause itching and irritation around there anus. However an infectedcor impacted anal gland can also cause the same symptoms and can rupture if untreated. I would take him to the vet to have the worms confirmed and get medicine for that. They can also chechnyhebgkabds to make sure antibiotics aren't needed to help. This does not have to be as an emergency thiugh, if he is eating and drinking well you can schedule an appointment for tomorrow

If the white specks in his poo look like grains of rice or sesame seeds then it is likely your dog has tape worm. ask your vet to treat your puppy for the parasites he diagnosed via a fecal sample (if he has not done a fecal sample, take some fresh poop to your vet for a fecal exam). You may also want to start with flea prevention as tape worm is transmitted by fleas.
