My 1-week-old puppy has watery yellow stool. Is my formula wrong?

Hello, congratulations on your puppies. In general they can have waxing and waning stool consistencies when they are this young. Most common causes for stool changes in puppies include parasites, dietary indiscretions, or changes in their GI tracts as they develop. Currently they are too young to deworm, however, as long as they are continuing to eat then you may keep monitoring them for any lethargy, worsening soft stools or diarrhea, or parasites in their feces. If you note any of these then contact your veterinarian to have them evaluated sooner. Otherwise, continue to allow them to nurse and begin to offer wet puppy food at 4-6 weeks of age. Hello, Arlo should still be fed some formula in addition to wet or moistened dry puppy food. This could be in addition to the rice and boiled egg. I would substitute the mild for formula. The liv.52 syrup is no necessary if you are feeding him a balanced diet. The stools may continue to be soft and yellow if the diet is not consistent, if he has any parasites (as he is still too young to be dewormed) or if the meal is hard to digest (too much fat or fiber). Try adding some puppy food and formula for two weeks and see how he responds. Best of luck and hope this helps.

Poor Chaw! Unfortunately it's impossible to know the cause of the diarrhea by looks alone. The diarrhea could be due to many conditions including a change in diet, bacterial over growth, parasites or other even parvovirus. Chaw is very small and I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian today. Small puppies can become very sick very fast and so need aggressive, early intervention. Make sure to bring in a sample of fresh stool. The doctor will check her for parasites and bacterial over growth. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A good diet in general is Royal Canin. It is low residue and highly digestible. This is likely just secondary to the milk replacement you are feeding him. Just keep a close eye on him and make sure he is eating well, continuing to have bowel movements and urinating. Also, make sure you are feeding him every 3 hours. I hope this helps and good luck!

Puppy stools can have a wide range of normal. Changes are often due to what they are eating or intestinal parasites. Cow's milk is not appropriate for puppies, you need to go to a pet store and get puppy milk replacer. The spots on his belly look normal in the picture, but they could also be caused by insect bites or puppy pyoderma, which often resolves on its own. A vet examination can tell you what is going on for sure. The vet can also test for intestinal parasites that aren't treated with over the counter dewormers, like pyrantel. I would discontinue the medications you are giving. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Sherlock! I am so sorry for the loss of your dog. I am assuming little Sherlock is being bottle fed puppy formula. Puppy formula can be very hard on puppies either causing diarrhea or constipation. I would try a different brand or mix 2 different brands together to off set each other. The other possibility is that if his mother died of a virus he could also have it. If he stops nursing you should immediately take him to your Vet for them to continue supportive care and/or possibly teach you how to tube feed. You can also start deworming Sherlock at 2 weeks and repeat dewormings every 2 weeks. Parasites can cause loose stool. I recommend putting a call in your Vet since they evaluated his mother. Hi there, sorry to hear about poor little Kunnu. Loose stools (pasty consistency) are normal for young puppies. Over feeding as well as parasites can cause very loose stools in young puppies though, some of which they can actually pick up from their mother. I like Esbilac puppy milk for new puppies, which can be ordered on the internet and generally is good on sensitive baby tummies. Is your puppy passing gas regularly? This can also be a problem. Newborn puppies can become very dehydrated quickly if they are not eating properly-if you are very concerned or your puppy is becoming lethargic I encourage you to take him in to see a veterinarian.
