Why is my puppy vomiting after vaccination? Is it an emergency?

Hello. It is not unusual for a puppy to feel a little unwell after receiving vaccinations, but these reactions rarely require treatment. Most symptoms will pass in 12-24 hours. If Baxter is otherwise feeling OK, or sleeping quietly, then leave him be. But if the vomiting is intractable, or he develops any diarrhea, quits eating & becomes significantly lethargic please see your veterinarian as soon as possible. Poor guy. It sounds like he may be experiencing a severe vaccin reaction. We treat these with a steroid shot and antihistamine shot. You will need to take him to your vet for treatment for this. B/c of the severity of his condition it is unlikely anything over the counter will help him recover. He also should be tested for parvovirus since he is so young and this is likely his first vaccination. You can try force feeding him some boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese and 1-2 tsp of honey or karo syrup to keep his blood sugar up, until you can get him seen. If it is not the vet who vaccinated him make sure to let them know he had a reaction so they can note in his chart and report it to the vaccine company. I hope Theo feels better soon.

This could be from parvovirus or intestinal parasites. Since he’s so small and young I recommend a veterinary exam and treatment. He could get dehydrated quickly and that can become life threatening. They will test him for parvovirus and check for intestinal parasite. They will probably give him fluids to prevent dehydration and medication to control the diarrhea. I'm sorry to hear Charlie isn't feeling well. It sounds like he has an upper respiratory infection. This is common for puppies that fly. They don't have a strong immune system and the stress of flying makes them susceptible to everything. I would also be concerned for parvovirus as that is also very contagious. Vomiting after a vaccination is not normal and is a sign of a potentially severe vaccine reaction. Any time I have administered a vaccination and the animal then begins vomiting or exhibiting any other abnormal symptoms, I treat as a potential adverse vaccination reaction. I would recommend taking him back to the veterinarian that performed the vaccination to have him examined and treated for a potential vaccination reaction.
