Is my puppy tired of her food? Should I switch dog food brands?

No, dogs typically do not get tired of the same food; in fact, they can eat the same food for their entire lives, moving to a senior version of the food when they are older. I never change my dogs' food, and they are happy to eat it every day. You can try a different brand if you'd like however, but make sure to make the switch slowly to avoid GI upset. Start by mixing together the old food and the new food, and over the course to two weeks, increase the amount of new food and decrease the amount of old food until they are eating the new food only. Yes dogs can tire of their food. If Murphie prefers human food over her own, she might be a bit spoiled so she is waiting for “treats” from you rather than eating her food. I also find this is a very shepherd trait. I had one too that would turn up her nose suddenly at food. I found buying smaller bags of food helped as she preferred it at optimum freshness and I rotated her variety more often. If you’re concerned about it, stop giving her people food and when she is hungry she will go back to her food. You could also try another flavour or meat protein (ie switch from chicken to beef etc) in the same line of food she is eating now and provide more moderation. Remember to slowly switch her food over several days, integrating the old and new foods to avoid tummy upset.

Switching flavors of food, even within the same brand, can cause GI upset in the form of vomiting and diarrhea. Dogs do not get bored with the same food, they can eat the same flavor every day and be fine. There may be a medical reasons as to why she appears bored, such as a dental issue. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sometimes dogs will just get bored of the same diet and just need to be switched to a completely new diet. I would recommend you consider a different diet though it could be from the same brand. Remember to introduce her to the new diet slowly as follows: feed 25% of the new and 75% of the old diet on day 1. Then feed 50% of each the second day and 75% of the new and 25% of the old on day 3. On day 4, you should be able to feed her the new diet entirely. Good luck and have a great day!

I would say that they are probably bored with the food, especially if they are not vomiting or having diarrhea. Try switching things up to another brand such as Royal Canin, Eukanuba, or even Viktor. I would recommend doing a slow transition over the course of a week to avoid any stomach upset and then trying on of the foods above or one you've found during your research. I am happy Luna is feeling better but a picky eater can be very frustrating. In my experience most dogs will not starve themselves. Changing foods often or back and forth Luna is learning if she does not eat she will get a better or different food. If the vet told you she is healthy I would start some touch love on her. I would get a food you want to feed and put it out for her. If she does not eat for 1-2 days than I would not be concerned. Typically once Luna realizes she is not getting anything else she will eat. Also if LUna is holding her body weight I do not get overly concerned. My own dogs will eat fast one day and slow or not at all the next. I think dogs will sometimes change there eating habits and this is okay as long as they are maintain weight and are still happy and healthy. I hope that helps

Dogs are lucky in that if they don't eat for a day or two there's no harm done. Cats will suffer liver damage after a few days, dogs just get hungry. As long as she is otherwise healthy, I wouldn't worry about it too much if she has a picky day here or there. Keep an eye on the behavior, to be safe, and see if there seems to be anything that seems to trigger the event, so you can keep your vet informed. If you do decide to change her food, don't do it abruptly. Make sure you have enough of the old food for about a week. You can change her over a couple of different ways. One method is to mix the two foods, 75% old, 25% new in a single bowl for 23 days, then 50% of each for a few days, then 25% old food, 75% new for 2-3 days or until you run out of the old food. Alternatively, you can offer two bowls of food, old food in one, new in the other. Gradually decrease the amount of new food until she is completely transitioned onto the new food. This will minimize and hopefully prevent any intestinal upset because of the new food. Feed the best food you can afford to as this will support optimal health which will, in turn, lead to fewer health problems later in life.
