Puppy's mouth swollen from stick. When should I see a vet?

It is possible he injured his tongue or gums or even deeper into his larynx. I would highly recommend a trip to the veterinarian with a sedated oral exam as it sounds like there is either and injury or remaining portion of the stick. Very often I find them on the roofs of their mouth. Good luck!

Poor Rinko! I would have this checked out by a vet in the morning. I'm concerned that her gums are swollen and her snout is puffy. This is likely painful to her, and you cannot give her any human pain medications. Many are toxic to dogs, and can be fatal if given. The vet can give her pain medications as needed. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Even though he is no longer bleeding, this is likely causing him a great deal of discomfort. There is most likely a wound in the mouth which is why he is drooling. I highly recommend having him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. If the swelling is hot and painful to touch, it is probably an abscess. In this case, you should take Angie to your local vets for an appointment today. If the swelling is not bothering your puppy, is soft and is not warm to touch, it could be an allergic reaction. In that case, you can monitor Angie at home for a few hours and apply a cold compress on the face every 1-2 hrs. If it is an allergy, the swelling should go down in the next 5-6 hrs.

I would keep a close eye on it, but she doesn't need to be rushed to an emergency clinic unless she's lethargic, refusing to eat, or the swelling is getting noticeably worse. This could be something as mild as a bug bite or previously unnoticed injury (particularly if she happens to live with a cat, but she could have scrapped herself on something a few days ago without it being obvious). It could also be the start of something more serious called Puppy Strangles. Because of the possibility of Puppy Strangles, I would recommend a check up at the vet tomorrow (or an emergency clinic tonight if you notice the changes mentioned above). Oh dear, poor Josie! Since you are unable to easily remove the stick due to her wiggling, I recommend taking her to an emergency vet (or your regular vet if they are open) now. If the stick is left in place, it may cause significant pain and damage to the gemlike, which could quickly lead to infection. If the stick becomes dislodged, it could also become a choking hazard or pose a risk of foreign body ingestion, either of which may lead to bigger problems. If she is too squirmy for an emergency vet to remove the stick while she is awake, sedation may be needed. I hope this helps and that all goes well!

Hello and thank you for your post. From your description, it is definitely possible that the stick caused some trauma and now Piper is painful from this. I would get her seen by a vet as soon as you can to make sure nothing is lodged in the back of the mouth. If she is refusing food then she certainly might have something stuck or a splinter that you cannot see causing discomfort. She may have also just strained her jaw with the stick getting lodged in her mouth. I hope piper gets well soon and hope this is just a strain and nothing more.
