Dog jammed stick in throat, painful, refusing food. What should I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Bulldog | Female | spayed | 1 year and 6 months old | 26 lbs

My miniature bulldog was playing with a stick and jammed it down her throat pretty hard. She keeps whimpering and yelping when she moves or when her neck is touched. There was no signs of blood we could see externally, but she is acting like she is in a lot of pain. She keeps walking with her head down and is refusing food which is strange for her. What could be wrong and should I be concerned? What should I do and will she be okay?

Hello and thank you for your post. From your description, it is definitely possible that the stick caused some trauma and now Piper is painful from this. I would get her seen by a vet as soon as you can to make sure nothing is lodged in the back of the mouth. If she is refusing food then she certainly might have something stuck or a splinter that you cannot see causing discomfort. She may have also just strained her jaw with the stick getting lodged in her mouth. I hope piper gets well soon and hope this is just a strain and nothing more. I'm so sorry Piper had trouble with a stick. I would first be concerned that all or parts of the stick are still in her throat. Sticks, if swallowed, can cause abrasions in the mouth and esophagus that can be painful. They also can potentially get stuck in the throat or even between the teeth and need to be removed under sedation. If she is acting like she is in a lot of pain to you, that is very concerning and I would strongly recommend you take her in to your vet to be evaluated. She may need pain medication and/or potentially medication to coat any abrasions that my be in her throat. She also could have injured her neck during the ordeal and your vet may be able to pin point the source of pain and treat it appropriately. She may need soft food for a few days as well, as that may be easier her to eat while her mouth/throat is recovering. I hope she is feeling better soon!

She may have cut or scraped the inside of her mouth and may even have a piece to the stick stuck in there. Try to get a look in her mouth without struggling with her too much and making her afraid. If you see something and you can get to it, try to get it out but don't get yourself bitten. If her swelling doesn't improve or gets worse by tomorrow, get her in to see your vet as soon as you can so her mouth doesn't get infected.

Dog mouth pain after chewing stick? Should I take him to the vet?

It is possible he injured his tongue or gums or even deeper into his larynx. I would highly recommend a trip to the veterinarian with a sedated oral exam as it sounds like there is either and injury or remaining portion of the stick. Very often I find them on the roofs of their mouth. Good luck!

Oh dear, poor Josie! Since you are unable to easily remove the stick due to her wiggling, I recommend taking her to an emergency vet (or your regular vet if they are open) now. If the stick is left in place, it may cause significant pain and damage to the gemlike, which could quickly lead to infection. If the stick becomes dislodged, it could also become a choking hazard or pose a risk of foreign body ingestion, either of which may lead to bigger problems. If she is too squirmy for an emergency vet to remove the stick while she is awake, sedation may be needed. I hope this helps and that all goes well!

My puppy ate sticks, won't eat, lethargic. Should I see a vet?

Her stomach may be upset because of eating the sticks, because of the diet change, a combination of both, there's no way to tell just from her symptoms. It may be that there is a piece of the stick still inside causing an obstruction or pain. I recommend getting her in to see your vet for an exam, possibly x-rays, right away if she starts vomiting again, develops diarrhea, continues to refuse food, and/or continues to be lethargic. If there is an obstruction or perforation somewhere in her GI tract, getting her sooner ir better than later, as this condition could require surgery.

My dog's mouth jabbed by stick, drooling, in pain. What to do?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Even though he is no longer bleeding, this is likely causing him a great deal of discomfort. There is most likely a wound in the mouth which is why he is drooling. I highly recommend having him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check what may be wrong so that therapy can be started right away. Best of luck!

My dog ate an ice cream stick and is heaving. What should I do?

Hello. Unfortunately, it sounds like the ice cream stick is lodged. There is a small chance that she might vomit it back up, but this could cause irritation or damage to the esophagus. I really think this needs to be removed by your veterinarian. Call to see if they have endoscopic equipment as this will be a non-invasive way to retrieve the stick ( altho it still requires anesthesia ). If the stick can not be removed this way, surgery may be necessary, but in most cases it is no more difficult than doing a spay. But I do recommend having her evaluated. Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. I would monitor Ripley for now as there are no clinical symptoms to be concerned about. What I would recommend doing would be to feed bread slices with pure canned pumpkin to help booked up the feces around the object to help prevent it from causing any punctures in the intestinal tract potentially. If you begin to see any symptoms such as vomiting, lethargy, abdominal pain, inappetence or anything else out of the ordinary I would get Ripley seen by a veterinarian sooner rather than later and have abdominal x-rays taken to see if the stick has caused any issues.
