Are 2 weeks of antibiotics normal for dog spay complications?

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 7 months and 18 days old | 3.6 lbs

Piper, 3.6 lb female Yorkie, 8 months old was spayed today. Complications of bleeding from the great ligament, which was stated to have hematoma (stabilized) when location found. She was put on 2 weeks of antibiotics due to removal of bowel to locate bleed. Does this sound like routine procedure? I'm just concerned bc generally 2 weeks of antibiotics in humans would mean there was a perferated bowel.

First off, I'm so sorry that Piper had complications during her surgery! Complications can happen, and if the bowels needed to be relocated to find the bleed, it does make sense to put her on a course of antibiotics to be safe. If her bowels were perforated, the vet would have told you about that complication, so it's more than likely she was prescribed the antibiotics as a precautionary measure. I'd be careful comparing how humans and dogs are dose in medications because dogs require different doses of drugs and may be given them for longer durations. I would give Piper the antibiotics as prescribed by your vet. Good luck, I hope this helps and she feels better soon!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your Piper. The blood could be coming from her bladder or what is left of her reproductive tract. If she was spayed at the time of surgery, it seems like the bleeding would have resolved by now. She could have acquired a urinary tract infection though. I would contact her veterinarian to see if a urine sample needs to be tested. Most of the time a small needle will be used to collect the sample directly from the bladder. Hello, sorry to hear about Memphis. It really depends on the type of antibiotics. The frequency of the medication should be written on the labeled bottle or packaging. Often antibiotics are given once to twice daily depending on which antibiotic was prescribed. If you do not see a label with the written prescription, you should call your veterinarian to a prescription. My dog is lethargic and not peeing after spay surgery. Is this normal?

The incision looks normal. Her behavior is not. I recommend a recheck exam. She could be painful or could have a urinary infection. If the doxycycline is causing a stomach upset they may be able to switch antibiotics. They can put her on pain medication also to make her more comfortable. I recommend feeding wet food with added water in it so she doesn't get dehydrated. Again most dogs are back to normal in a day or two after the surgery so please bring her in for a recheck to make sure there is no complication. My dog's spay incision is leaking on and off. Should I see a vet?

Hi and thanks for getting in touch with us! The incision seems relatively healthy, with a small amount of dry discharge. Antibiotics will prevent any infection. She should be checked only if the discharge is increasing and she seems uncomfortable and lethargic. She should be absolutely kept indoors and rested as much as possible. A cone/buster collar should be kept on at all times.

Is my dog's spay incision infected 6 days later? She's so hyper!

It does look like there could be some irritation and possibly infection here based on the discharge I am seeing. There appears to be mild inflammation of the area. I would recommend putting an e-collar (the cone shaped collar) on Piper and calling her vet in the morning. The vet may need to prescribe antibiotics, give you an e-collar if you don't already have one, and may be able to prescribe a sedative if you are having trouble keeping Piper calm. In the meantime, confine her to a small room or kennel if you have one available. Best of luck to you and Piper!

My dog has bloody stool after spay, tests negative. What's wrong?

Hello. The surgical incision looks very good, & her stool is normal, so this may be a case of stress-induced colitis. If she is otherwise feeling well, eating & drinking normally, then I would not be too concerned. The blood should go away. If there is still blood present in the stool when you go back to have the staples removed, ask your veterinarian about trying a round of the antibiotic, Metronidazole.
