My new Golden Retriever puppy has soft, smelly, watery stool. Why?

Soft stool has multiple causes. It may be gastrointestinal upset or inflammation, intestinal parasites or due to dietary indiscretions just to name a few. As long as Remy is acting normally, you don't necessarily need to take him to your veterinarian. You should submit a stool sample though to diagnose intestinal parasites. Try withholding food for 24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until the stool is normal then transition slowly to his regular diet. If the soft stool does not resolve or if Remy develops lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain or vomiting them have him examined by your veterinarian.

There could be a couple of reasons why Febi has blood in his stool. He could have intestinal worms, a severe GI illness, may have eaten something rotten, could have a foreign body, or could have parvo. Have him seen by a vet as soon as they open. Best of luck.

Hello. If you have access to a good probiotic for dogs, then I would start this immediately. If no dog probiotics, then the human product, Culturelle, is fine to use. Just use the adult recommended dose. I would also make sure they only receive bottled water, or water that has been boiled & cooled. Make sure they have no access to any standing water outside. If your veterinarian can send off a stool sample to test for other organisms that cause diarrhea ( this is usually referred to as a PCR Diarrhea Panel ), this would be very useful, too. Take a stool sample to your vet for testing. Parasites such as coccidia and giardia are not treated with a general dewormer and require a specific medication. Your vet should also palapte his hips and possibly take an xray to determine why he is having problems sitting or standing. He could have hip dysplasia or another orthopedic issue. Hope he feels better soon.

I would feed a large breed puppy food. Iams is a good quality food that is usually available in Walmart or grocery stores as well as pet stores. I would recomend minimizing treats and changing to a milkbone hard type treat if he gets diarrhea with his current treats. He should not get any table food at all. Make sure you mix dog foods and gradually switch to the new diet over the course of a week or he may get sick from an abrupt change.

Diarrhea in puppies is almost always due to intestinal parasites - either worms or protozoan parasites. I suggest you have a fecal test done at your vet's office to rule those in/out. In the meantime you can start him on a probiotic (one made for dogs, not humans) and keep him on a consistent diet. No treats or human foods until the diarrhea has resolved.

Submit a stool sample to your veterinarian to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. Puppies frequently acquire roundworms from their mother or environment. The paper likely would not cause an issue unless it was a large quantity. Make sure he continues to eat and drink normally. A bland diet and/or a prescribed dewormer may firm up his stool. Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting or persistent diarrhea.
