My 9-week-old puppy has soft, pudding poop. Should I see a vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 20 lbs

My 9 week old golden retriever poop is very soft almost like a pudding texture. There is no sign of blood or mucus in it, but was just wondering what it might mean and if I should get him into a vet

Soft stool has multiple causes. It may be gastrointestinal upset or inflammation, intestinal parasites or due to dietary indiscretions just to name a few. As long as Remy is acting normally, you don't necessarily need to take him to your veterinarian. You should submit a stool sample though to diagnose intestinal parasites.
Try withholding food for 24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until the stool is normal then transition slowly to his regular diet. If the soft stool does not resolve or if Remy develops lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain or vomiting them have him examined by your veterinarian.

Oh no poor Remy! It sounds like he may have diarrhea, which in puppies can commonly be caused by intestinal worms. Make sure he is up to date on his deworming treatments, giving him one if he isn't. He will need one every two weeks until he is 12 weeks old. Then one every month until he is six months of age, and after that he should be dewormed once every three months.

If he's up to date on his deworming treatments, then it may mean he has a GI illness or may have eaten something rotten. You can try a home remedy first to see if that helps before having to take him into the vet. Withhold food for 6 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.

I'm sorry to hear that Gypsy has had so much soft stool. She may have developed gastroenteritis from a diet change or new treats, parasites, intestinal virus, among other issues. Try withholding food for 12 hours, then you can try feeding her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice (3 cups per day, divided into 3-4 smaller meals) for a few days. After that time, gradually mix her puppy food with the bland diet over another 5-7 days. If the soft stool worsens, or if Gypsy begins to vomit, become lethargic, or stops eating, she will need to go to her vet for further evaluation. I hope that she feels better soon!

My puppy has diarrhea for a week after eating soup. What should I do?

At this point, I don’t think it’s the soup. Common causes of persistent diarrhea in a puppy would be intestinal parasites, bacterial or viral infection, continued dietary indiscretion (meaning he keeps eating things he shouldn’t), or, less commonly, a food sensitivity to his current puppy food. Since this has lasted longer than 24 hours, I would recommend taking Sunny to the vet for evaluation. They can check a stool sample for parasites and evaluate his vaccination history to make sure there weren’t any gaps, then proceed with a recommended treatment.

Hi there, I wouldn't be worried about one stool like this, but if it worsens or there is any vomiting, disinterest in food, or lethargy, that would warrant an emergency exam for a pup his age. Parvovirus is of serious concern if he is not fully vaccinated. If his stools remain soft but he is otherwise well, I'd recommend calling your regular veterinarian. They may recommend an exam or prescribe probiotics or a diet change if they have already seen Cliff. Puppies his age are generally dewormed every two weeks to eliminate all the life cycles of the most common parasites. I hope this is helpful. Why is my dog's poop soft, red, or unusual? What should I do?

This looks like Bear has soft stool, close to diarrhea. The red color could be caused by the color of his dogfood, but it could also be a little blood. If Bear is happy, does not appear ill, lethargic , eats and drinks you can do the following: Diarrhea can have many causes such as a food over sensitivity, eating something that does not agree with the dog, intestinal parasites, an intestinal blockage, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc. I would fast Bear for 24 hours and then put him on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea or he starts vomiting, or if Bear gets lethargic, he needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.

My puppy has pudding poop after new food. What should I do?

Rich foods or new foods have the potential to trigger diarrhea in sensitive dogs. I recommend feeding white rice and scrambled eggs until the stool is normal. Rice can regulate intestinal motility, and the eggs are easily digestible. Adding a probiotic is a good idea, and this can be added to the rice and eggs. Once the stool is normal you can start adding Alpine's regular kibble back in.
